Flo Settles, much-loved and well-known Friday Harbor resident, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 in Friday Harbor.

Flo was born on July 17, 1926 in Tarrytown, N.Y., one of four children born to John and Susan Dunn. She had three brothers: Sydney Henry, Fred Lee and Paul Dunn. Flo met and married Chuck Settles on July 29, 1945 while he served on the USS Brooklyn, based in New York.

Chuck brought Flo to Friday Harbor where they lived for 64 yours and raised their four children: Donna Collins, Charlie Settles, Jim Settles, and Christy Johnson. Flo was grandma to Mike and Bart Meyer, Chad Settles, Linnea Johnson, and Krista Settles; and great-grandma to Nolan and Dutch Meyer, and Myla Settles.

Flo and Chuck loved outdoor life and took their family boating and camping around the islands. They enjoyed traveling and had vacation homes in Alaska and California, and a beach cabin on Lopez Island where the family retreated from Friday Harbor’s hectic pace of life. Wherever they traveled, they met and befriended hundreds of people.

The family would like to invite the community to celebrate Flo’s life at a memorial service Nov. 7, 2009, 1 p.m., at Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made in her name, to the Salvation Army.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc. To share memories of Flo, sign the online guest register at www.evanschapel.com.
