Edge of Wonder spells awe at SJCT

Mouths may just be hanging open, heads might be shaking in confusion [how do they do that?] and eyes will definitely be wide open when Thomas Arthur and Christian Swenson bring Edge of Wonder to the San Juan Community Theatre on Thursday, July 10.

Mouths may just be hanging open, heads might be shaking in confusion [how do they do that?] and eyes will definitely be wide open when Thomas Arthur and Christian Swenson bring Edge of Wonder to the San Juan Community Theatre on Thursday, July 10.

Captivating and surprising, this evening will tantalize the entire family as each of these performance artists wows with unusual talents.

Arthur is a lyrical juggler who choreographs sound, motion and light, using abstract vocalization, acoustic music, subtle storytelling and digital media that turns juggling into a dance form. One reviewer described Arthur’s performance as a “a mind-blowing revelation.”

Swenson’s art form is also mind-altering. Calling himself the “Human Jazz,” he uses his body and voice to become a variety of “lifeforms.” (Imagine watching a human become a lizard or a monkey or even a bubble.) “…with an open heart and mind as a springboard, I freely imitate other species and cultures as well as entities from imaginary realms,” said Swenson.

Edge of Wonder begins at 8 p.m. PLUS! The family entertainment starts even earlier, when the island’s own Stone Soup Marimba Band plays outside the Theatre at 7 p.m. The band, organized by local marimba teacher Margie Smith, features 11 players—the youngest being just two years old.

Edge of Wonder is sponsored by Kings Market. Tickets are $18 for adults and $9 for student reserved, with $5 student RUSH available at the door. A private donor has made provision for free tickets to anyone needing financial assistance to attend a Theatre event.

The SJCT box office is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and one hour before each performance. Call 378-3210 or visit www.sanjuancommunitytheatre.org.
