Driver’s disdain, marine moon, suspect shoulder | San Juan County Sheriff’s Log

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

May 24

• A deputy on Orcas stopped the driver of a vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign. The driver received a citation for expired registration over two months and a warning for failing to heed the stop sign.

• A Friday Harbor resident reported an incident of harassment from an employee of a local business. The deputy suggested they report the attitude and behavior to the manager of the company and a statement was emailed to the reporting party.

• On a ferry from Orcas to Lopez, deputies and Lopez EMS responded to a person who was having a panic attack. Once on Lopez, EMS evaluated the individual and arranged transportation to the hospital.

• A deputy on Orcas stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding and issued them a warning for speeding and a citation for not having insurance.

• A Lopez deputy responded when a person reported hearing a loud crashing noise near Hooterville Lane. An investigation found that a construction crew was working in the area.

• A deputy responded to a report that a Lopez resident had mail stolen out of their mailbox. Nothing of value was taken and a report was drafted.

• Deputies, along with San Juan Fire and EMS responded to a report that a vessel at Jacksons Beach had taken on water, was sinking and the vessel’s operator was in the water. A passing vessel assisted brought the operator to shore and towed their boat.

May 25

• An Orcas deputy responded to a single-vehicle rollover accident due to distracted driving. The driver walked away with minor scratches. The witness said they were not speeding, and that the shoulder grabbed the vehicle and pulled it into the ditch where it flipped and rolled.

• A Lopez deputy responded when a Lopez citizen received a call from someone impersonating the Social Security Administration. The citizen gave the caller their social security number, then contacted her bank and was given contact information for the real Social Security Administration.

• A deputy was contacted about a vehicle prowl that occurred in Friday Harbor. The person said their vehicle had been entered and a small item had been taken. There’s no suspect information or evidence at this time.

• A deputy was dispatched to a citizen assist in Friday Harbor involving juveniles.

• In Friday Harbor, a deputy was contacted in reference to a trespassing. The complainant requested a trespass warning letter, which they signed.

• A San Juan deputy was en route to a call when they observed a driver who had a suspended driver’s license. The deputy later located the vehicle as it was about to board the ferry and issued the driver citations for DWLS-3rd degree and for not having insurance.

May 26

• A deputy on Lopez was dispatched to a likely 911-misdial from a passing boat. The boat was not located.

• A Lopez deputy performed a civil standby.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a hit-and-run when an unknown vehicle damaged a mailbox. There are no investigative leads and no suspects.

• On San Juan, the Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of clothing and garbage left on private property. There are no investigative leads or suspects at this time.

• A deputy on Orcas spoke with a citizen who wanted to report a possible residential burglary. Neither the individual nor the deputy had the legal authority to be at that residence. The homeowner had not reported any burglary.

• A Lopez resident reported a threatening comment received from a neighbor. The reporting party requested that a report be completed to document the incident.

• A deputy on Orcas spoke with a citizen who wanted to report a possible theft after a sign went missing after being stowed away. There are no leads at this time, and further investigation is required.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding and issued them a citation for driving 40 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• A deputy on San Juan was dispatched to a report of a dog-at-large. The dog was returned to the owner and the owner was given a citation for a dog-at-large, first offense.

• A Lopez deputy responded when an individual living near a waterfront restaurant witnessed a patron “moon” his friends as they boated by. The suspected flasher was gone by the time the deputy arrived.

May 27

• A Lopez deputy performed a welfare check. The involved person was not impaired but refused to seek care for their illness.

• A Lopez deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding. The driver was issued citations for driving without an operator’s license and operating a vehicle without insurance.

• A deputy on Orcas conducted a citizen assist.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a welfare check in the Deer Harbor area. When the person was contacted they did not wish to speak with law enforcement. The person who called was advised and said they were satisfied with what had been done up to that point.

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of an animal bite, and transported the victim to the hospital for treatment; an animal bite report was completed.

• A San Juan deputy was at the hospital for an animal bite report when the deputy was informed of another bite that occurred earlier in the day with an unknown dog. The deputy then attempted to contact the victim, who did not answer their phone.

• A Lopez deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was drifting off the road. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence.

May 28

• Deputies on San Juan were dispatched to a report of a missing person experiencing a health crisis. The person eventually returned home on their own.

• On San Juan, a deputy was dispatched to a health crisis. The deputy attempted to locate the person in crisis. When the person returned to their residence, the deputy made contact. The person was then taken to the hospital for evaluation.

• A citizen turned in a driver’s license and school ASB card to a San Juan County Sheriff.The owner was unable to be reached and the items were entered into evidence.

• On San Juan, a car struck a bicyclist. The cyclist was transported to the hospital for possible injuries, and the driver received a citation for negligent driving in the second degree.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding and cited the driver for traveling 69 mph in a 45 mph zone.

May 29

• Along with Orcas Fire and EMS personnel, deputies on Orcas responded to a report of a person who was unconscious and not breathing. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. A death investigation commenced and is ongoing.

• A Lopez deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle that was the subject of a traffic complaint last week. The driver was issued a criminal citation for driving with a suspended license.

• A deputy on San Juan took a report of a theft from a local business.

May 30

• Deputies on San Juan and an Orcas deputy responded to a report of a domestic incident on a vessel and determined no crime had been committed. However, one involved party had an out-of-county arrest warrant and was arrested on that warrant.

• A deputy on San Juan received a report of a no-contact order violation. The deputy made contact with the person violating the order, arrested them, and booked them into jail for violating said order.

• A vehicle was issued a parking ticket at the Lopez ferry terminal. The vehicle’s owner frequently disregards the clearly posted parallel parking only sign, which limits access to the parking lot entrance for other drivers.

• A deputy on San Juan received a report of a lawn mower theft. The case is still under investigation as the deputy obtained a video of the incident.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a report of the theft of a package from a mailbox

• In Friday Harbor a deputy received a report of a vehicle prowl. The victim indicated that most likely happened on May 24 around 10 p.m. A wallet and a key were stolen from the vehicle; the case is under investigation.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to an agency assist callback. The agency contact stated they would re-contact the Sheriff’s Office next week, once they completed their investigation if follow-up was required.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a lost property call at the Orcas sub-station. The reporting party needed a case report for documentation to renew a passport.

• Deputies on San Juan responded to a citizen dispute. Neighbors got into an argument, and the reporting party wanted to be left alone. It was learned that the reporting party had active warrants for their arrest, and they were arrested on those warrants and booked into jail.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a report of a vehicle intentionally blocking Mackaye Harbor Road. The driver refused to move and was heavily intoxicated. They were arrested for assault, disorderly conduct, and negligent driving.
