Dog struck, killed by car; handgun heisted; DUI’s aplenty: San Juan County Sheriff’s Log

San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls: 

Feb. 4: A Lopez Island woman claims someone sneaked into her car and stole $466 cash while she was at a friend’s home in the Hilltop Way neighborhood. Her vehicle was reportedly unlocked at the time. 

— A .25 caliber handgun, $300 cash and a tattoo machine vanished in an apparent break-in and theft at a Lopez Island home. The Foxglove Lane burglary remains under investigation. 

Feb. 5: Two dozen pre-paid debit cards vanished in an apparent break-in and theft at the Lopez Island Family Resource Center. Someone reportedly pried open a locked door to get into an office where the cards, valued at $25 apiece, were kept.  

Feb. 8: Roughly $650 was drained from a Lopez Island school bank account in an apparent case of identity theft and fraud. Someone reportedly used a school bank card in making a total of five unauthorized purchases sometime within the four days before the fraudulent use of that card was discovered and reported by school officials. A trio of attempted purchases on that card were denied during that same time frame.  

— A tip about erratic driving led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man for DUI following late-night traffic stop near the intersection of Tucker Avenue and University Road. The 46-year-old, who was also ticketed for speeding and for failing to wear a seat belt, was pulled over at about 10 p.m. 

Failure to obey a stop sign led to the arrest of a San Juan Island woman for DUI following a late-night traffic stop in Friday Harbor. The 43-year-old, who was pulled over near the intersection of Mullis and Spring streets shortly after midnight, was also ticketed for disobeying the stop sign. 

Feb. 9: A Bellingham man wanted in connection with an alleged crime in Ferndale was apprehended in local waters by the U.S. Coast Guard, and then turned over to deputies in Friday Harbor. The man, who was taken into custody on an arrest warrant at about 8 p.m., will be transferred to Whatcom County authorities. 

— A poorly lit and obstructed license plate led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man for DUI following a late-night traffic stop in near the intersection of Blair Avenue and Reed Street. The 41-year-old was pulled over at about 10:30 p.m. 

— An Orcas Island man claims someone pirated his credit card information and then use it to make 11 fraudulent purchases in and around Texas that total $2,000. The man reportedly had been traveling in Mexico and Texas shortly before the bogus purchases began to appear on his bank statement. 

Feb. 10: A queen-size mattress, box spring and assorted bedroom furniture disappeared from a San Juan Island home in an apparent break-in and theft. Someone reportedly broke into the Halsey Road guest house, which belongs to a Seattle man, sometime in late December and, in addition to the bed and box spring, made off with the bed’s headboard, two pillows and a comforter, and a night stand. 

— A Lopez Island man was arrested for DUI following an early evening single-car collision in the 200 block of Mud Bay Road. The 29-year-old, who was also ticketed for driving without a license or identification, reportedly drove off the road and into a ditch shortly after 6 p.m. 

— An Orcas Island man faces charges of DUI and possession of pot following an early evening single-car collision in the 600 block of Olga Road. The 61-year-old reportedly drove his pickup off the road and into a ditch shortly at about 6 p.m.  

Feb. 11: A Friday Harbor woman claims a neighbor ran over and killed her dog, and also failed to stop, while speeding away from her home Maple Street home at about 11 p.m. The dog’s owner had reportedly just let it out of her house moments before the deadly collision. Her neighbor reportedly told a deputy that she was unaware she had hit the dog. 

— A pair of warrants prompted a mid-morning arrest of an Orcas Island man at his Pine Street apartment. The 51-year-old was taken into custody at about 10:45 a.m. 

— A trio of misdemeanor warrants prompted a mid-morning arrest of an Orcas Island man at his Point Lawrence Road home. The 44-year-old, who posted $600 bail and was then released with a pending date in court, was taken into custody at about 10 a.m. 

Feb. 12: A crisscross over the center line led to the arrest of a Kenmore man for driving with a suspended license following an early evening traffic stop on Orcas Island. The 35-year-old was pulled over in the 800 block of North Beach Road at about 10 p.m. 

— A burned out headlight led to the arrest of a San Juan Island for DUI following a late-night traffic stop near the intersection of Beaverton Valley and Ivan roads. The 31-year-old, who was pulled over at about 11 p.m., was also ticketed for driving with a suspended license and a defective headlight. 

Feb. 13: Failure to obey a stop sign prompted the arrest of a San Juan Island man for DUI following a late-night traffic stop in Friday Harbor. The 26-year-old, who was pulled over near the intersection of First and West streets shortly before midnight, was also ticketed for failing to stop at the stop sign. 

Feb. 14: Excessive speed prompted the arrest of a San Juan Island man for driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop near American Camp. The 64-year-old was reportedly pulled over for driving 58 mph in a 45-mph zone at about 3 p.m.  

Feb. 15: A 30-foot aluminum boat and a large assortment of tools vanished from the state Parks maintenance building on Sucia Island in an apparent theft. The missing tools, boat and equipment, valued at $3,320, disappeared from the Mud Bay maintenance shop sometime between Feb. 10 and the 15th. Three men aboard a fishing boat were reportedly seen in the vicinity of the shop during that 5-day time period, according to two men on a boat which was moored in Mud Bay at that time. 

— Scott Rasmussen
