Ranking Standards

CBD Oil companies, like many companies in health and wellness, throw around labels like “non-GMO” and “natural” so often, it can make it difficult to know what is real. Because of this, we chose our ranked under the following guidelines (asking these questions can help you decide on products in the future):

Lab Testing: Did they publish lab results upfront? Were labs third-party? Were they transparent with these practices?

Organic: Are they organic certified by the USDA or other major bodies? Is it more than just a claim?

Company & Team: Do they have doctors, pharmacists, or other experts on staff or are they just a marketing company? Do they do social outreach or have a good reputation? Is there an ethos and medical advisory board and are they transparent about it?

The Carrier Oil: Is it water based or in a carrier oil? Is that oil MCT from coconuts or other sources (coconut being best)?

Location: Are they grown in the United States or abroad? Are they transparent about where their ingredients, and especially the hemp, are grown?

Cannabinoids: Are they full-spectrum blend CBD oils? Or are they CBD isolates? Do they list their dosage and ingredient amounts?

Other Ingredients: Do they use other ingredients like turmeric or are they pure? What are the other ingredients and does it help? Are they scientifically backed?

Customize: Are they a one size fits all product or can you customize dosage and amount?

Flavors: Do they come in different flavors? Are those flavors natural or organic? Are the flavors synthetic?

Advertised Health Benefits: Do they suggest any health benefits? Are they legal to suggest?

Hopefully this list makes it easier to understand ours and to help you think about how to select something for yourself when researching a health and wellness product such as CBD oil.

Should I Use CBD Oil? The science

Studies and anecdotes suggest CBD Oil can help with the following things:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Sleep
  • Pain relief
  • Seizures and epilepsy
  • Inflammation
  • Digestion, heart health, and more
  • Overall health and wellness
  • But what does science tell us exactly?
  • It’s hard to say for sure.

It is supportive of cannabinoids and getting more so with each study done but not enough is done to be 100% sure of everything it does and can do for the body. Hopefully, as more research is done and released, it will become more clear just how helpful it is but the current understanding is still positive.

CBD Oil:

Is well tolerated in humans according to this 2011 study, showing doses of up to 1,500mg per day which is a higher dose than is standard for most people anyways. As long as used as recommended, it is presumed sage. In 2017, researchers updated that study showing new findings over a period of six years further confirming its safety in high dosages but they also noted a need for more large scale research on long term safety in the general population.

Has been shown to be beneficial to childhood epilepsy syndromes, including Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) according to this Harvard Health study. As these syndromes do not often get under control with common anti-seizure medication, CBD Oil treatment has been particularly life-altering.Even the FDA recently approved the first-ever cannabis-derived medication for it..

Social anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and cognitive functioning, among other somatic and psychiatric disorders, have shown marked improvement with CBD Oil according to this 2020 study analyzing both 830+ human participants and human cells between the years 2000 and 2019. CBD Oil was found to be well-tolerated, had mild side effects (if any), and exhibited an array of benefits. Harvard Health also suggests it as an option for other milder mental and overall health benefits such as anxiety, pain, or insomnia- but more research is needed on all of it.

Pain, inflammation, and arthritis can be reduced and mobility boosted i dogs with osteoarthritis according to a Northwestern Medicine’s study but the results were not conclusive and further information and study is needed to confirm. This 2018 study had researchers give 2mg or 8mg per kg of CBD oil to dogs with osteoarthritis over a four weeks and found even the smallest amount given twice a day improved pain and mobility.

Pain, inflammation, epilepsy, and sleep disorders were found to have benefited from CBD oil according to this 2018 study published in Molecules.

Anxiety disorders such as GAD (generalized anxiety disorder), PTS (post-traumatic stress disorder), SAD (social anxiety disorder), and OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) were all found to have been potentially helped in this 2015 study, while this 2018 study focused solely on PTSD patients.

Opioid epidemic and addiction issues may be helped by inhibiting and managing triggers for cravings and anxieties according to a study of 42 drug recovery patients. They claimed reduced cravings after just one week on regular CBD Oil intake.

Significantly more research is needed but the results thus far are a net positive at best and neutral at worst. The biggest set back in CBD Oil is consistency in products on the market. This is an unfortunate reality with many supplements and oils in health and wellness as the FDA does not often require jurisdiction. Mayo Clinic found nearly 1/4th of CBD online purchases had less CBD than advertised and contained THC even when not advertised to. Hopefully, as more studies are done and release, we will begin to understand more of it’s benefits, as well as any unknown long term consequences.

Dosage

CBD oils dosing varies based on weight, metabolism, body chemistry/physiology, and what you want to achieve. It can range anywhere from 5mg to 200mg per serving and it will wholly depend on trial and error as it effects everyone differently. Experts suggest starting at the smallest dose first and working your way up to a comfortable point for you.

You should take each new increased dosage 4 to 6 hours apart, paying close attention to your body and any effects it appears to be having. This should leave time for your body to absorb and adapt. For some people, 5mg will be enough while others will need significantly more.

It’s important to keep in mind that time of day may also affect personal dosage as some take it for sleep needs specifically, but so can the means by which you take it. For example, how much your body will absorb can be affected by whether or not you take it straight or mix it with food.

Known Side Effects of CBD

We already showed several studies suggesting no negative effects from taking CBD oil but a 2019 study found that CBD could cause liver damage in mice and could interact with medications. However, negative side effects in humans are extremely rare but include appetite change, fatigue, and digestive discomfort. A reminder to always purchase from a company that is transparent about it’s ingredients as the FDA does not regulate CBD Oil.
