Take a few singers, musicians and tap dancers and add in a belly dancer, a unicyclist, and even more unique talents, and you’ve got an island recipe for a high-spirited cabaret-style variety event.

The first ever Sensational Summer Variety Show, a fundraiser for San Juan Community Theatre, takes place in the Whitter Theatre from Thursday through Sunday, July 13-16. On Friday, July 14 at 6:30 p.m. and during intermission, a special “Goodie Gala,” featuring wine and sweet and savory treats from Cakes by Felicitations, will be held in the Gubelman Theatre and Steele Memorial Garden.

Directed by SJCT’s Julie Hanks and emceed by SJCT’s Bobby Ryan, the fast-paced show features a potpourri of island talents, including pianist David Bayley; tap dancers Floyd Bourne, Shannon Kelley, and Penelope Haskew; puppeteers Jan and Jim Zurcher; belly dancer Megan Vivenzio; singer/guitarist Bert Dayton; poetry/guitarist Mosa Baczewsla; island youth drummer Blake Budwill and unicyclist Kira Clark; and more.

“It’s no secret the islands are full of incredible talents — almost 30 years of our thriving community theatre sure proves that,” said Hanks. “This lets all types of folks get involved in sharing and experiencing the uniqueness of our islanders.” In addition, the audiences will be the first to hear an exciting announcement from the executive/artistic director of the theatre.

The variety show starts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Thursday is pay-what-you-can at the door. Show tickets for Friday-Sunday are $16 for adults, $10 student reserved and $5 student RUSH at the door. Admission to Friday’s “Goodie Gala” and that evening’s show is $40. The box office is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or tickets may be purchased at www.sjctheatre.org.
