It was the kiss seen round the world. A Life magazine photographer captured a Navy sailor kissing a woman on Times Square, a spontaneous celebratory response to the announcement that World War II had ended. American Legion Post 163 will remember that moment and honor World War II veterans with a special dinner and a contest to see who can best replicate that kiss.
Joyce Christine Morrill Gaylard, beloved mother and wife, went home to be with her Lord. Joyce “Tiss” was born to Calvin Clare Morrill and Betty Mae Blanchard-Tate on Nov. 11, 1948 in her maternal great-grandparents’ home off of Sutton Road in Friday Harbor. She passed away March 6, 2010 after a long illness.
Islanders are invited to a reception at the Roy Franklin passenger terminal at Friday Harbor Airport on March 27, 4-5 p.m. The occasion is the annual update of the San Juan Aviation Museum, which is honoring Bob Nichols as its featured pilot this year.
On Monday night, Friday Harbor Elementary School was filled with the sound of more than 300 drums, in an event sponsored by the San Juan Island Prevention Coalition.
Lavendera Day Spa presents “Island Visions,” an exhibit of works by Beth Hetrick. In “Island Visions,” Hetrick has captured the familiar, the nostalgic, the comforting vistas all islanders are familiar with. Her canvases draw the viewer in and cause some to exclaim, “Oh yeah, I’ve seen that truck!”
It is a fact that the San Juan Islands bear a passing resemblance to the landscapes of Ireland. There is both a negative and a positive to this. On the one side, the Irish fiddle player is forced to go through the boredom and discomfort of a 12-hour plane ride to end up in a place that looks much the same as the place he or she just left. On the other hand, however, it means that San Juan Island is the perfect place to host a festival dedicated to the culture of Irish music.
Gwen went quietly and peacefully in her sleep. She was 72. She was the first of two daughters born to Hazel and Howard Lawson of Friday Harbor.
Cameron Hull “Butch” Avery Jr., longtime island resident, passed away in Seattle on Feb. 8, 2010 due to complications from a stroke he suffered on Christmas Eve. He was 71.
The 2010 Census has begun. Census enumerators began delivery of 2010 census forms to Lopez, Shaw and the outer islands Wednesday. General mailing of 2010 census forms to all island mailing addresses begins March 15.

Abby, our beloved pound puppy for 16 years, passed from this world Feb. 25. She was there with us as we raised three children, sailed the sound, hiked the high country and finally settled on San Juan Island.
Byron E. Harrell passed away from pneumonia in Island Hospital on Jan. 23, 2010. He was born in St. Paul, Minn., and attended the University of Minnesota. After serving in World War II, he took courses in vertebrate paleontology at the University of Michigan, where he met and married Joyce.
