    Persistence has paid off for Rhiana Franklin. Rhiana, an incoming junior at Friday Harbor High School, won the Colgate Country Showdown hosted by radio station 92.9 The Bull, Saturday at the Moxee Hop Fest in Moxee. Her win comes six weeks after she placed second in the KMPS 94.1 FM Colgate Country Showdown at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma.

    Pete and Erin Ancich are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Layla Evelyn Ancich, on Tuesday, July 27, 2010. Layla was born at Stevens Hospital in Edmonds, Wash., at 1 a.m. She weighed 6 pounds 8 ounces and was 19.75 inches long.

    The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain will make a rare stop in Roche Harbor Aug. 4-10 and offer a full slate of public activities. The vessels will fire a cannon salute to the community when they arrive at about 5:30 p.m. after an all-day passage from Anacortes.
