Persistence has paid off for Rhiana Franklin. Rhiana, an incoming junior at Friday Harbor High School, won the Colgate Country Showdown hosted by radio station 92.9 The Bull, Saturday at the Moxee Hop Fest in Moxee. Her win comes six weeks after she placed second in the KMPS 94.1 FM Colgate Country Showdown at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma.
Family Art Days continues Aug. 14, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the IMA Sculpture Park. Family Art Days is a free, family-oriented art activity led by a local or visiting artist. Materials are provided.
Pete and Erin Ancich are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Layla Evelyn Ancich, on Tuesday, July 27, 2010. Layla was born at Stevens Hospital in Edmonds, Wash., at 1 a.m. She weighed 6 pounds 8 ounces and was 19.75 inches long.
Supporters of the American Camp prairie rabbits will gather Sunday at 3 p.m. at South Beach for a Bunny Tea (tea and carrot cake will be served) and to spend some time in what Bryn Barnard calls the “gentle Art of Watching Rabbits.”
Long-time Friday Harbor resident Betty J. Hood, 88, died July 28, 2010, in Orem, Utah, after suffering a stroke. Service is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7, at 3 p.m. at Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church.

The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain will make a rare stop in Roche Harbor Aug. 4-10 and offer a full slate of public activities. The vessels will fire a cannon salute to the community when they arrive at about 5:30 p.m. after an all-day passage from Anacortes.
The San Juan County Fair is Aug. 18-21. The theme is “Locally Grown.” The fair features four days of competition, live entertainment (the headliners are bluegrass/Celtic rock group Clumsy Lovers), equestrian events, exhibits, rides and shows.
Re-enactors from throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada will once again celebrate peace as they gather for the 13th annual Encampment, July 31 — Saturday — on the English Camp parade ground. In conjunction with the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale on July 30 and 31 — Friday and Saturday — the library will offer works from its permanent art collection for sale by sealed bid. The sale will be held at Friday Harbor Elementary School on Grover Street. The sale starts on July 30 with a special opening for members of the Friends only, from 6-8 p.m.

Marguerite Rebecca Gudgell came to Orcas Island on the afternoon boat on a clear day in late summer of 1963. The wife of a school teacher and mother to three children, her arrival would change the lives of countless people for decades to come.
