    A celebration of Doug Grossarth’s life is scheduled for Aug. 14 — Saturday — at 4 p.m. at San Juan Golf and Country Club. No-host bar. Hot dogs, salad and chips will be served. “Please join us to share stories and pictures of our dear friend, who passed away on Aug. 1 in his home in California,” an invitation said.

    The U.S. flag was raised for the first time in 36 years at Turn Point Light Station on Stuart Island, Aug. 12. The ceremony was conducted by people dedicated to the restoration of Turn Point Light Station. Special guests included Dan and Gloria Alexander of Olympia. They were newlyweds when the Coast Guard assigned Dan to Turn Point in 1949.

    Friends for Life Animal Rescue will hold an Adopt-A-Thon on Aug. 20, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the field on Argyle Avenue and Malcom Street, Friday Harbor. Friends for Life is a non-profit, no-kill rescue group made up of dedicated volunteers who strive to find loving, forever homes for animals in their care. Instead of a central shelter, animals are raised in foster homes where they receive love, medical care, socialization and one-on-one attention.

    The San Juan County Fair starts next week, and here are a few facts to know. First, the fair is from Aug. 18-21, Wednesday through Saturday. Horse events start at 9 a.m. Exhibits and entertainments run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Season-pass ticket prices are $18 for 65 and older, $22 for adults, and $10 ages 5 to 16. Children younger than 5 have free entry. A daily pass costs $10 for 65 and older, $12 for adults, and $5 for ages 5 to 16. Again, children younger than 5 have free entry.

Rhiana, an incoming junior at Friday Harbor High School, won the Colgate Country Showdown hosted by radio station 92.9 The Bull, Saturday at the Moxee Hop Fest in Moxee. Her win comes six weeks after she placed second in the KMPS 94.1 FM Colgate Country Showdown at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma.
