A Northwest food historian explores the art of dining in a special free lecture at San Juan Community Theatre on March 3. Humanities Washington and Living History Lectures, in conjunction with the SJCT production of A.R. Gurney’s “The Dining Room,” present Tames Alan’s “Trial by Fork: Formal Victorian Dining Demystified.”
It was an inanimate object that took center stage Feb. 19 at San Juan Community Theatre. The audience, after taking their seats and adjusting to the soft, museum-like light, could see that the set was dominated by one piece: A dining room table. True, there was a dresser against the back wall, the obligatory dining room chairs, but the table was the focal point in an otherwise uncluttered environment.
A play written by Ed Strum of Cape San Juan has been awarded the 2010 Robert J. Pickering Award for Playwriting Excellence. Strum’s comedy, “The Connoisseurs,” will premiere March 4 in the Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater, Mich. The historic opera house and theater opened Sept. 21, 1882.
Kathryn Pinion, a resident of Village at the Harbour in Friday Harbor, celebrated her 100th birthday Feb. 23. She is believed to be the island’s only centenarian. Dave Champlin, another Village resident, will share the honors Sept. 12 when he celebrates his 100th birthday.
Members of the Lutheran Church in the San Juans processed on Feb. 14 from St. Francis Catholic Church a few blocks to St. David’s Episcopal Church, which will be their new worship home. The Rev. Raymond Heffernan and members of St. Francis Church wished them farewell as the Lutherans processed to St. David’s, where they were welcomed by the Rev. Doug Simonsen and members of St. David’s.
Desi Whalen won fourth place and $500 at the Washington State American Legion Oratorical Contest. Desi, the daughter of Carol Whalen and Ron Whalen, both of Friday Harbor, is a junior at Friday Harbor High School.
Frances Josephine (Mickey) Cahail passed away Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, in the Islands Convalescent Center at the age of 100. She was born October 21, 1909, south of Friday Harbor near Madden’s Corner to Julius Oscar Bergman and Mary Ellen (Madden) Bergman. She was the third of five children.
Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor are celebrating Friday Harbor’s Centennial with more than 100 members. San Juan Island’s club was founded in 1996 by a group of women who shared the vision of a service organization focusing on the needs of women and children. Forty-four islanders signed the charter, of which 13 are still active members of the club: Lenore Bayuk, Carrie Brooks, Judy Cornell, Lynn Danaher, Phyllis Davis, Debbie Dickinson, Pat Hansen, Nancy Hanson, Carol Jackson, Mitzi Johnson, Judie Ross, Annette Schaffer and Vicky Thalacker.
Rosary will be recited Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. and Mass will be celebrated Feb. 20, 11:30 a.m., in St. Francis Church in Friday Harbor for Frances “Mickey” Cahail. Mrs. Cahail died at 11:50 p.m. Feb. 12 in Islands Convalescent Center. She was 100.
Fredrick William Bourland Sr., a Friday Harbor resident and former general manager for Valmark, went home to be with his Lord and Savior following complications from radiation treatment for lung cancer.
He was 73. His life was a testimony of commitment to God, his wife, family and friends.

Director Susan Williams is holding auditions for one of the most beloved musicals of all times Feb. 15 and 16 at 6:30 p.m. The auditions for “My Fair Lady” (book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, music by Frederick Loewe), will be held in the San Juan Community Theatre’s PARC Building, 70 Saltspring Drive.
The third and final weekend of the 2010 Islands Playwrights Festival features two short plays and a monologue focusing on San Juan Island people, places and memories.
