Author, artist and illustrator Sam Connery will discuss and sign copies of his six books Nov. 6. 2-4 p.m., at Griffin Bay Bookstore, 155 Spring St. Connery may be joined by Paul Chadwick, a Disney storyboard artist who created the “Concrete” comic book character and with Connery authored “Let’s Cartoon!”
Friday Harbor High School’s Homecoming parade on Oct. 22 attracted a large crowd of Wolverine fans, family and friends, who followed the student floats from downtown to the high school. The Wolverines’ homecoming game against Lynden Christian was just as spirited, although the home team lost 27-13. The Journal’s Jane K. Fox produced this multimedia presentation of Homecoming 2010.
Chris and Betsy Pope of Friday Harbor are delighted to announce the births of two granddaughters: Ada Lillian Cauldwell Greene, born July 31, 2010 in Portland, Ore., daughter of Sarah Pope and Adam Greene. And Lucy Caroline Zaslow Pope, born Aug. 26, 2010 in New York City, daughter of Marika Hufford Zaslow and Saxton Pope.
BBC Radio 4 reporter Andrew Luck-Baker spent time with local whale researchers this summer to report on Tucker, a black Labrador trained to help researchers whale scat for study. Tucker is part of an elite team of detection dogs used by scientists studying a number of species, including right whales and killer whales.
The San Juan Historical Museum hosts authors Mike and Julia Vouri on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. for a presentation of the new book “Images of America – San Juan Island.” The museum’s newest book was published by Arcadia Publishing Co. as part of its Images of America series.
Graveside service for Nikki Fink is Saturday, Oct. 23, at 3 p.m. at St. Francis Cemetery on San Juan Island. The service will be followed by a celebration of life, 4-6 p.m., at Rumor Mill.
As Nikki Fink lay in her hospital bed, her body fighting infection so she could get a life-saving lung transplant, family and friends prayed. They prayed for healing. They prayed for a miracle. The 28-year-old woman died peacefully, on a cool fall Sunday afternoon, surrounded by those who love her. And those in the room realized that their prayer had been answered, long before they ever offered it up.
If autumn nights leave you feeling lethargic, San Juan Community Theatre has the perfect remedy. On Oct. 24, SJCT hosts Asleep at the Wheel, a band renowned for bringing energy to every show. The nine-time Grammy winners, originally formed in Paw Paw, W.Va., found success quickly after forming in 1969, opening for big names like Alice Cooper and Hot Tuna in Washington, D.C. In the ensuing years, the band turned out a consistent stream of popular, western-swing, boogie, and roots-music for a large fan base.
Nikki Fink, 28, of Friday Harbor is in the intensive care unit at University of Washington Medical Center, awaiting a lung transplant. Fink has cystic fibrosis. She is the daughter of Yvonne Bowman and stepdaughter of Gary Bowman of Friday Harbor; she has a five-year-old son, Xander.
San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce’s business showcase, called The Style, debuted on Oct. 9. The event pulled in packed crowds to one of the waterfront condos at 123 West St. Businesses from the island took the opportunity to showcase their products and services before walking in The Style fashion show.
Food, games, a coloring contest, a rescue demonstration, and lots of fun are on the agenda at the Safety Fair on Saturday, Oct. 9, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mullis Street Fire Station. Participating agencies include the Friday Harbor Fire Department, the San Juan Island Fire Department, San Juan Emergency Medical Services, the Sheriff’s Office, the Fire Marshal, the Red Cross, Firewise, San Juan County Health Department and the San Juan Ham Radio Operators.
Florence was born in Seattle to William A.H. and Catherine Philo, two immigrants from England. She grew up in Seattle, attending seven different schools as her family moved frequently. Before she met Ralph, she attended school with his niece Charlotte and they became lifelong friends.
Bill Hamel, born Oct. 18, 1936, passed away Oct. 5, 2010 in Ellensburg, Wash., while traveling to Arizona. He was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y. and moved to Orcas Island with his wife in 1985. He came to the Pacific Northwest through his employment with Boeing.
