Joe Wheeler and Kimmie Wilson are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Lena Jean Wheeler. Lena was born at Skagit Valley Hospital on Oct. 13, 2010, at 7:35 a.m. She weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces and was 22 inches long.
June 9, 1970 was the centenary of the writer Charles Dickens’ death. For most, the date would mean no more than a celebration of the famous author. For six-year-old Gerald Dickens, however, it meant something more personal. Dickens is the great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens, and the centenary marked a realization of this important relationship.
Chamber Music San Juans host some special guests Nov. 7 (today): the accomplished string quartet Odeonquartet. They will play a selection of Russian pieces at the San Juan Community Theatre, beginning at 2 p.m. Fresh from a Moscow tour earlier this year, the musicians will play an array of Russian chamber music — from Pavel Karmanov’s 1997 minimalist, baroque-informed string quartet; to Glazunov’s 1892 richly-orchestrated cello quintet.

Miguel Andreas Herbert’s comedy-drama “Only a Ridgeline Away,” about two Vietnam War veteran buddies who live together at the California State Veterans Home in Napa Valley, was staged at the Legion, its first test as an off-theater, on-the-road production.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Carrie A. McLeish (Friday Harbor High School Class of 1989) graduated from the U.S. Army’s School of Information Technology at Fort Gordon, Ga. on Oct. 29. Completion of the 950-hour Warrant Officer Advanced Course earned McLeish several certifications, including GIAC Certified Windows Security Administrator, Intrusion Analyst, Incident Handler, Systems and Network Auditor, Forensic Analyst, Penetration Testor and Firewall and Ethical Hacker. GIAC stands for Global Information Assurance Certification. Fewer than 100 individuals worldwide hold all these certifications.
John D. Lacher, father of Friday Harbor Mayor Carrie Lacher, died Monday, Oct. 25 after suffering a heart attack. He was 82. John was blessed with an easeful passing in the loving presence of wife Mary, daughter Lauren Cole, and son Kurt Lacher. John was born in Seattle, Wash. on July 24, 1928. John and Mary met at the University of Washington as students. They were married on July 8, 1950. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this summer. Children and grandchildren gathered from across the country to share stories, smiles and hugs that will long be remembered.

Ghatan said his musical tour will steer the audience to such composers as Bach, Beethoven, Granados, Joplin, Mozart, Schubert.
