Island youth offered a trip of a lifetime

Submitted by the Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center.

Summer programming is hugely impactful for youth. It keeps them off of screens and around their peers while having new experiences that build skills. However, across the country, there aren’t enough affordable summer opportunities for all the youth that want them. Jim and Joanne Richardson understood this and approached Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center with a plan. Long-standing philanthropists, the Richardsons donated two full scholarship opportunities to Cushing Academy, a private school in Boston that offers immersions in the summer.

The Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center advertised this opportunity through the school and the resource center. Two students worked closely with Delphina Liles, the Youth Services Coordinator, to develop interview skills and self-confidence. Arleth Churape and Nanci Pantoja were accepted into the program and this past week they flew off to Boston for five weeks.

Arleth will be focusing on English as a second language, math, and soccer. Nanci will be focusing on drawing, photography, and volleyball. Both girls will get the chance to explore Boston on weekend field trips as well.

THANK YOU to Jim and Joanne Richardson for their thoughtfulness and generosity. Supporting youth builds a future we can all believe in.
