Great Islands Clean-up on San Juan Island April 20

Help make San Juan Island “Plastic Free by the Sea.” This year’s Great Islands Clean-up is on Saturday, April 20. Join the countywide greening event and collect litter from public beaches and roadways.

Pick up your trash collection equipment at the central meet location next to Bonnie’s Creative Passions at 635 Spring St. in Friday Harbor from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. There is also a drop-in beach cleanup at South Beach via Pickett’s Lane from 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

If you would like to be assigned to a cleanup location ahead of time, contact Katie Fleming at katie@sanjuans.org or 360-378-2319. Bags, grabbers, safety vests and latex gloves will also be available at the San Juan County Public Works office on Spring Street during the week before the event.

The Stewardship Network of the San Juans and San Juan Island Brewing Company are cosponsoring a thank you party for cleanup participants at the brewery (410 A St.) in Friday Harbor. Bring a picture of you participating in the cleanup and you will get one pint of beer for $1 between 3 and 5 p.m. There will also be a raffle for people of all ages including prizes from the Stewardship Network members.

Litter picker-uppers will be asked to join the recycling diversion challenge this year. We are seeing how much of the collected litter can be diverted to recycling. Help sort any clean recycled material from your roadside or beach litter. If you have questions about what is recyclable, there will be people on hand to help you. Be sure to bring back what you collect for the diversion challenge to the central meet location next to Bonnie’s Creative Passions, by 2 p.m.

There will be litter cleanup events happening on Orcas, San Juan, Lopez and Shaw islands. Visit www.plasticfreesalishsea.org/events for more information about the events on all the islands.
