Graduation 2024

There was standing room only in the Turnbull gym on June 8 as islanders turned out to watch the class of 2024 receive their diplomas.

“The class of 2024 is one of my all-time favorites,” Mary Smith, a substitute teacher who has been at the district for years said. “So much energy, personality and intelligence.” Smith was awarded a $1,000 bonus for meeting her teaching day quota of over 100 days. Smith announced she was sharing the funds with two students, Aldo Valencia and Dylan Mughal. Altogether, the class of 67 students won a record-breaking half million dollars in scholarships.

The class had three valedictorians; McKenna Clark, Alden Carli and Bryce Ridwan.

Ridwan told the crowd about the memories and special bond he and his classmates share, from playing tag in elementary school to building floats together in high school.

“Nothing is going to stand in our way,” Ridwan said, “I am incredibly proud of this class. I know as we head off to college, work, or some other equally exciting endeavor we will achieve amazing things.”

Carli also reflected on the accomplishments of the class, and the community that shaped them. “I want to thank our teachers and staff members, parents and the community. Without you, it’s safe to say we would not be where we are today,” he said. “I also want to appreciate this beautiful island that we are all fortunate to call home. It has helped shape every single one of us on stage to the people we are today.”

Clark discussed that childhood desire to grow up, yet when it approaches, not wanting to cross over the threshold. Despite the mix of nervousness and excitement, moving forward, she said is the only option. “Sure there will be challenges, but each of us will overcome them and persevere,” she said. “The world we are stepping into is rapidly changing but each of us of us holds the power to make a difference and to leave our mark on the world.”
