The Friday Harbor Film Festival is going virtual this year, featuring award-winning documentaries, short films, and student-made films, as well as daily live-streamed Q&As with filmmakers. All films will be available on-demand for 10 days, Oct. 15-25. Q&As will be recorded for those who can’t participate via live stream. Read about this year’s lineup at www.fhff.org. Thanks to the generosity of part-time islanders and enthusiastic film festival supporters Suzy Mygatt Wakefield and Jay Wakefield, all films entered in the Student Film Competition will be available free for everyone to screen. The Wakefield’s want to introduce students to the art of filmmaking by viewing their peers’ work, while also encouraging family viewing of thoughtful documentary programming, and inspiring interest in the films FHFF offers. Viewing the student films begins early — Oct. 10 — at www.fhff.org.

Audience members will vote for the Audience Choice Awards for Best Feature, Best Short, and the Laszlo Pal Emerging Filmmaker Award in two age categories — ages 11-17 and 18-26. This year’s Local Hero Award will be presented to documentary filmmaker James Longley. After growing up on San Juan Island, he has gone on to become an award-winning filmmaker and photographer. His recent film, “Angels Are Made of Light,” will be featured during the festival. The Audience Choice Awards live streaming presentation is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 25.
