Friday Harbor Labs seminar, Nov. 20

Submitted by Friday Harbor Labs

University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs presents “Next Generation Ocean Science: Being There Without Being There” by UW oceanography scientist John Delaney. The seminar is at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20 in the Friday Harbor Labs Dining Hall.

Admission for the dinner and talk is $20 for adults, students 18 and younger are free if reserved by Nov. 18. Reserve your seat by calling 360-378-2165 by Nov. 18.

Human Society is as dependent upon the global ocean — our planetary life support system — as the astronauts were on their backpacks when they were on the surface of the moon hitting golf balls.

Delaney is one of the pioneers in the use of fiber optics to build undersea observatories. Wiring oceans to the internet complements ship-based expeditions and enables scientists, educators and the public to access real-time ocean data from anywhere.

In this public lecture, John will share how the rapidly changing world of deeps research will allow us to continually study these crucial ocean ecosystems.
