Friday Harbor Green Drinks is back

Submitted by Stewardship Network of the San Juans

The Friday Harbor chapter of Green Drinks has been in hibernation since October 2018, but now has a new organizer and will restart on Oct. 17, with an event at the San Juan Island Brewing Co., 410 A St., Friday Harbor. The event will follow the same format as previously, with an informal mix-and-mingle from 5:30 p.m. and community announcements at 6:45 p.m.

Almost a year after the last Green Drinks event in October 2018, the Stewardship Network has stepped forward to give the Friday Harbor chapter a new organizational home.

“We’re excited to pick up the torch and keep the collaborative spirit of stewardship going,” said Kelsey Kittleson, Stewardship Network coordinator and lead organizer of Green Drinks.

Many in Friday Harbor have been missing the Green Drinks monthly meetups, which provide opportunities to meet new friends and catch up with old ones in an upbeat, inclusive environment. Green Drinks was originally conceived as an event for people working in the environmental field, but the Friday Harbor chapter has always taken a broader view, welcoming anyone at all with interest in the environment. The event has become a meeting point for conservation, agriculture, marine science, and other fields. The community announcements offer a chance to find out about events, initiatives, and services throughout the county.

Green Drinks is an international, self-organizing network of environmental folks or those interested in getting involved. Currently, you can find monthly Green Drinks meet up groups in 530 cities around the world. Friday Harbor’s local chapter of Green Drinks was established in April of 2015 by Kelsey Leigh Green. It includes a great mix of nonprofit organizations, local government, academia, agricultural producers, local businesses, kayak companies, the whale community, Friday Harbor Labs and the general community. Anyone working in the environmental field or interested in getting involved is welcome to attend. Find more details at www.greendrinks.org.
