Friday Harbor girl wins fishing derby on Orcas

Saylor Whalen from Friday Harbor took first place in the 23rd annual Bill Yarlott Youth Fishing Derby on April 27 on Cascade Lake in Moran State Park. She caught a 17-inch rainbow trout.

Soren Connell and Millie Nibler tied for second with two 16.5-inch trouts. Joe Simpson took third with a 16.25-inch trout. The event was hosted by Orcas Adventures.

Bill Yarlott, an 87-year-old fishing enthusiast who was instrumental in stocking Cascade Lake with Kokanee Salmon and Rainbow trout, passed away in 2015. His grandson Brooks fished this year, and he caught an 11.5-inch rainbow trout.
