Local singer/songwriter Devorah has landed a gig on “Wake Up with Al Roker,” on The Weather Channel. She will sing live on Dec. 11 at 6:50 a.m. EST.

Devorah had initially thought she would tape on Dec. 11 for broadcast Dec. 14, but learned early today that she would perform live. She expects to sing a song from her new CD, “5770.”

“The phone rang this morning, and I was told that I would be singing LIVE this Friday at 6:50 a.m. EST on the ‘Wake Up with Al Roker’ Show, on The Weather Channel,” she wrote on her Web site.

The appearance is a big boost for her career and for her new CD. And it came with sacrifice: She’s been staying in a hostel in the Big Apple, and mortgaged her home to pay for the CD’s production. (Donations to help her defray her expenses can be sent to P.O. Box 13, Friday Harbor 98250.)

This summer, Devorah rode her bicycle from Seattle to Los Angeles — 1,136 miles over 25 days — with the hopes of getting an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel or Jay Leno’s shows.

Earlier this year, she won Artist of the Year from RockTheBlues.com, and filmed a commercial for the National Wrestling Alliance Showcase, which has 17 million subscribers on DISH Network and 200,000 online viewers.

“The stars seem to be lining up for San Juan Island’s hardest-working rocker, who’s long been on the cusp of national attention,” The Journal reported in May. “Airtime in Morocco with ‘Speak,’ a song she recorded with her then-husband, Tom Doenges. Another song almost picked up by Heart and Kenny G. Regular gigs with Albritton McClain & the Bridge of Souls. A performance at the International Peace Day concert in Manhattan.

“And all the while, evolving. Maturing from the Debbie Sundog of Bonnie Raitt covers and Roche Harbor gigs to the Devorah who’s willing to take the time and draw music from the experiences of her life, from the deep recesses of her soul.”

She’s being advised by Billy Terrell, who has produced, published or written 49 Billboard chart-makers in eight genres. And she’s been in discussions with Thrive by Five, an early education advocacy group led by Bill Gates Sr., for the use of her song, “Wake Up (For the Children).”
