The Dangerfields will be playing at Brickworks on June 14, along with Ugaia and the Tara Craig trio, for the fourth annual iteration of the “Brickworks Street Dance.” This free show, featuring local talent playing a variety of styles, is meant to gather islanders together to kick off the summer with live music.
“Come, spend a few hours, groove on some tunes and enjoy the Island Magic!” Steve Cutting, bass player for the Dangerfields, said. “Live music is the best, good for the soul, creating those magical moments for players and the audience when things are really groovin’.”
The Dangerfields is a group of five self-proclaimed “old cats still rocking.” Teddy Deane (80), Jonathan Piff (75), Steve Cutting (71), Dan O’Bryant (67) and Joey Gargiulo (56) practice every Wednesday night at The Fold and have a full calendar of performances over the summer. Cutting gathered his musician friends from various blues jams, open mics, old bands and island friendships to create the Dangerfields.
“These guys are family to me, and we’ll continue to play till we can’t play no more!” he laughed. They play a mix of classic rock, blues, a bit of funk, some oddball stuff and a few originals.
“We try to put our own twist on whatever we cover,” Deane, saxophone player, said. They’re also increasing their playlist all the time and continue expanding into more genres. “I love playing with the Dangerfields. I still love to play rock and roll and will do it till I can’t breathe anymore.”
The Dangerfields will be joined by local all-women band Ugaia (a play on feminizing the masculine term “you guys”). This group, similar to the Dangerfields, also came together later in life with a shared love of music that crosses genres and pushes boundaries. Laura McKee, Mosa Baczewska, River Wylde and Luna Wylde have a passion for empowering women through music. They write their own stuff and have a new batch of original songs to debut at Brickworks on the 14th.
“For all of us, coming together later in life to make music feels like a dream come true—a homecoming of the heart,” the band told the Journal. “It’s empowering, exciting, and healing, and filled with harmonies and sisterhood of spirit.”
The Tara Craig trio will also be performing that night. Craig is an award-winning singer-songwriter offering vocally driven, indie-folk-pop.
“We’re excited to kick off our busy summer schedule with UGAIA and The Dangerfields,” Craig said. “We’d love to see everyone there!”
