Caregiver-owned homecare cooperative

Submitted by Deborah Craig

Recently, caregivers on San Juan, Orcas and Lopez islands have been meeting to discuss the idea of starting a caregiver-owned homecare cooperative in the San Juan islands. Working with Northwest Cooperative Development Center, caregivers are starting a process to determine if a caregiver co-op is right for their island and if it would benefit both the elders and the caregivers of these communities.

As a first step, the caregivers decided to survey island caregivers to get an idea of how many people are working as caregivers and an estimate of how many hours they are working. This survey is anonymous and the results will be shared with the communities.

The survey will be open until Feb. 22. All island caregivers should take the survey.
