“Between” is about the space between all things – thoughts, words, musical notes, islands … where infinite potential exists, and ultimately love.
Artist Lisa Lamoreaux, who can be found at the Friday Harbor Atelier, used acrylic, water-mixable oil and oil stick to create what ultimately became an experiment for her; “Between” bridges a style of abstracted landscapes she’d been creating for several years and a more impressionistic style she hadn’t yet attempted.
“The painting took on a life of its own as I worked,” she shared. The elements of shade and sun captured her attention.”I wanted the viewer to feel like they were standing in the shade, and feel prompted to go on a journey between the islands and around the corner to the sun.”
Lamoreaux has a consistent goal in her work of evoking imagination. She likes to hint at magical realms in a scene where one can see new things every time one looks at it. “Between” led to such a moment with “Between” by a patron at an art show.
“I was at a show opening where this painting could be viewed from a distance, and someone pointed out to me that they loved the big heart in the middle of it.” Lamoreaux had to go look to see what they were talking about. “Now I can’t unsee it as the primary thing bridging the foreground and background and seamlessly touching the islands, water and clouds all at once with a little optical illusion.”
Others seeing things in her art, even things she didn’t originally intend, is the space of mind and imagination that she aspires to while painting.
“Teetering on the line of abstract and representational is what makes it all exciting and interesting for me,” she said. “When a viewer goes there, I have done my job.”
