A Journal reader recently submitted a letter asking seven specific questions of EMS about the proposed increase in the its property tax levy. Click on the headline to read the reply.
I have worked closely with Rhonda during her 14-year tenure with the auditor’s office. Her knowledge of the county’s computer systems, her work ethic and her customer service skills will greatly serve the citizens of San Juan County, and will ensure a smooth transition for the office of treasurer.
When it comes to the style of policing, the past couple of years has seen a trend in what I think is the wrong direction. There seems to be a consistent emphasis on "catch and enforce" rather than "serve and protect."
I appreciate all the skills, experience, and time to further educate himself as Rob Nou has done and continues to do.
None of us are immune from a stroke and a fast response is very important when a stroke arrives; so if we lose our EMS services the next islander to have a stroke may very well die.
Everything was going smoothly until I tried to choose a password with "at least one alpha numeric... and at least one non-alphabetic special character." Really? My bank doesn't require such a thing.
I believe Friday Harbor should adopt the White “Serenity” Flag as its brand to celebrate our unique culture of peace, freedom, independence and heritage.
It is difficult enough to practice medicine and to maintain public credibility without the added burden of inaccurate press releases and inadequate fact-checking. Witness the mess of health system errors and horrible reporting nationally on the Ebola virus situation.
I have the highest respect for the EMS personnel but do have concerns regarding the fiscal management of our tax dollars. If your tax revenue increases due to a rebound in property values, how will you the deal with the excess revenue?
Communication is key in leadership. Ron has, as a peacemaker, not only in the community, but within the agency, has repeatedly proven himself to be a strong communicator.
As the elected sheriffs in Island, Watcom and Skagit counties, respectively, who share a common border with San Juan, we count on Sheriff Nou as a critical part of the Northwest Washington Law Enforcement “Leadership Team.”
By supporting them, we are supporting our friends and our families, our community, and ultimately ourselves with one of the finest and most highly-respected EMS departments in the country.
When I commented at the dump that it is getting expensive I was told that I could save money by just putting my recycling into the trash and that is what a lot of people are doing. I feel like this is going backwards.
Words do matter and they can often make or break an issue, especially when they appear in the media. What is “onerous” in our society today is the number of men, women and children killed and injured by guns.
In her eight years as County Clerk, Joan has helped increase public access to the Superior Court, made it more user-friendly, and improved the security of and accessibility to our public records.
United Way supports SJIPC to help youth acquire skills for navigating our globally competitive information age.
As the county’s IT manager and on behalf of the county’s employees and the citizens who depend on our services, I thank CenturyLink’s Skels and Connally, and council member Bob Jarman for stepping in and doing everything necessary to get us working again.
The EMS professionals provide much more than emergency care when disaster happens, they support their patient and give surrounding friends and family emotional support and important information about what happens next.
The amount of money being requested now is far in excess of that which is necessary to provide quality service to our community with the level of emergency response to which we have become accustomed.
It seems that when the solid waste transfer truck from Friday Harbor is in transit on the ferry, it is depositing maggots on the car deck of the ferry. Lots of them.
The entire branding idea (justifiably in my opinion) may be sliding into obscurity. Look at where we live. Do we really need branding?
Renovations are currently underway at Friday Harbor High School to create a new STEM Center to promote science, technology, engineering and math education. This year’s phon-a-thon will seek funds to equip the new computer lab, in addition to many other initiatives in the elementary and middle schools.
Many St. Francis parishioners received an email, which was thought to represent the entire parish and administration, but it did not; it reflected the desires of some members of the Tarte family, who want the chapel to remain a consecrated space for Catholic worship during the summer season.
The ongoing prairie restoration work at American Camp reflects an active and thoughtful approach to land management.
It's been a pretty long time since a man has spun fantasies about me, so in a way I should be grateful to Mr. MacLeod for thinking about me in his off hours.
Less well known is the Foundation’s involvement in support of practically invisible services geared toward those least able to advocate for themselves.
Over the next several years, I observed significant and positive motivational changes in the student. Ron remains one of the most committed parents I have met in my 27 years here.
I can look at a 100-year-old building or a post-war structure and appreciate that each has something to say about America, and even our community, at a given moment in time.
Imagine walking into a room and being transported back to 1964 where you felt you were continuing a conversation that you had started 50 years ago.
I am asking the community to do one more thing for me and all those fighting cancer now and in the future. Please attend the Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer society on Sept. 27 at the Fairgrounds from 3-11 p.m., and show us your support. There are many in our community that would benefit.
It is life-affirming to live in a place where ideas matter, and where the hard work of many can create true change. For that we are grateful.
Relay For Life makes it possible for the American Cancer Society to provide helpful information on cancer, treatments, support services, and more 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at 1-800-227-2345 and cancer.org.
The Post Office itself could help ease the traffic and congestion in the area of the Blair Avenue road construction, and in its own parking lot, by temporarily placing mail-drop boxes at four or five locations around the perimeter of the town. Several convenient locations come to mind...
We would never knowingly do anything to offend our neighbors or to detract from the beauty of our island. We hope that this will not prevent people from attending the “Remember the Rendezvous” Salmon Barbecue on September 13 at the Fair Grounds.
San Juan Islanders for Safe Shipping says "thank you" to all of you who stopped by to buy a brownie, spin the oil tanker Wheel of Fortune, and/or sign the petition at our booth at the County Fair.
Our area of San Juan and Skagit counties has a greatly expanded population base. The extremely loud Growler jets are a poor fit in this situation and are bound to create more complaints as the Navy continues to expand the numbers of aircraft and activities at Whidbey.
First, I do not officially speak for the American Legion in Friday Harbor, but as an American, although I have been a legion member and officer for over 25 years.
During the 4 of July parade (Lopez), a group protesting jet noise from NAS Whidbey participated.
Thank you, thank you, thank you; each and every one of you who participated on stage, behind stage and behind the scenes of the Trashion Fashion Show.
To all the visitors and residents of San Juan County who helped with the success of this year’s Photography Department at the San Juan County Fair.
