With their investment in the fiber backbone and their support of the new Rock Island Communications subsidiary, OPALCO board of directors have charted a course of action that is good for the county and good for the economy.
It is not the high school but our state legislature that is not doing it's job in this instance, and that is the ruling of the state Supreme Court, not just my opinion.
A special thank you goes to the 52 youngsters from Cub Scout Pack 4090, Paideia School, and Stillpoint School who helped clean Eagle Cove, Jackson Beach, and the streets of Friday Harbor, respectively.
How can you not support an organization that keeps us healthy and participating in activities that keep us growing and developing as a community while having fun?
Not all athletes are stellar students; however, the grade requirements FHHS imposes to stay eligible and play the sport they love drives them to overcome obstacles in the classroom and improve performance. I’ve seen firsthand.
Every time I see the wonderful volunteers with their bags and bright vests picking up roadside trash, it reminds me what a terrific place in which we live.
The effects of a sexual assault is dramatic and life-changing. Personal relationships fall apart, self-esteem is destroyed, depression and often suicide attempts result. But the good news is this can all be avoided by educating our children and educating ourselves.
Contrary to the impression left by the Journal’s article, our family had nothing to do with the altercation and unfortunate sequence of events that ultimately led to a violent situation.
Having hosted the recent OPALCO candidate forums and followed OPALCO closely for years, we believe Randy and Winnie are best suited to help mitigate the negative impacts of these monumental shifts in our co-op.
I grew up in Friday Harbor and sports were an incredibly positive experience for me and paramount to keeping me “grounded” in my teenage years.
Without funding from Island Rec, our schools would not be able to provide the well-rounded education so essential for today’s students.
Last Saturday, Soroptimists cleaned Jackson Beach, a project that we’ve done every other month for some time now...
The present exhibit of William Morris glass is a feather in IMA’s cap that they can attract world renowned works. The fabulous display and the accompanying film are something no one should miss... it could compare to anything we’ve seen worldwide.
Meetings are now held at the County Council chambers every fourth Wednesday, at 5 p.m. Otherwise, feel free to go to the San Juan County website to view “streamed meetings” at home.
Island Rec is more than just a park and recreation district; it engenders the very amenities that provide our island with a quality of life unmatched in this state.
I for one am really excited about selecting items from the “Value Menu” and using Sunshine Alley as the drive thru.
Cries of support were heard in the stirring documentary, “Our Sacred Obligation”. Thank you to Ken Crawbuck for showing this film as part of his Tragedy of the Commons film series on March 21. Thank you also to the San Juan Island Library for hosting this well-attended event.
From finger-painting t-shirts to swimming lessons, from Music on the Lawn to Films in the Park, from senior fitness to school sports, Island Rec has consistently provided programs, events and open space that serve and support the very heartbeat of our island and our community.
Allegations by a letter writer of my having a conflict of interest have no merit. He jumps to an erroneous conclusion that I knew what the future would bring.
No. 3: because the Hospital District Board members, who should be responsive to the public on San Juan Island, instead see themselves as apologists for the hospital administration.
As with any successful venture, it takes a community of generous donors. The following are those whose gracious support made The St. Patrick's Day Extravaganza spectacular...
Sports create a venue for students to develop leadership skills, earn PE credits, develop a strong work ethic and give a student a sense of belonging. Many of our sports teams earn top state academic awards for high cumulative grade point averages.
We were just poking around Friday Harbor, killing time, waiting for the ferry and were drawn in by the building itself. The experience unfurled as we entered the building.
As taxpayers, we support Island Rec through a regular levy, and I for one feel I get good value. As a retired senior, I have exercise class, trails and trail walks, drop in and league sports, the dog park...
I am so happy that I got your wonderful state of Washington for my project. I would love it if you would send me some postcards, a souvenir or any information about your wonderful state.
The 2015 Community Needs Task Force will provide a forum for discussion of community needs, increase awareness of current and future projects, and facilitate collaboration among organizations.
My wife and I live in the town of Friday Harbor. Our monthly water/sewer bill has a “base” rate charge... Why can’t this same scenario be used by OPALCO?
Our “Dining” goal is to raise $6,000 for our scholarship fund and you can help by simply dining out for breakfast, lunch or dinner (or all three!) on this day.
Who in the world is Mimi Gates, and why should I care if she is amused?
Charlie (Bodenstab) and the IMA Board have done a fabulous job of putting these beautiful and most professionally presented exhibits together of William Morris and his pupils. Clearly, this gorgeously built IMA will attract major contributions to Friday Harbor and the San Juans in the future.
It’s not a question of whether broadband is useful or good. It is both... The question is whether the broadband customer, generally those with more money, should be subsidized by the electric ratepayer
Certainly this department needs more "unprofessionalism" rather than more professionalism, so it is good to know that there have been complaints. Thanks for the laugh.
When she bought her property in 2012 an easement was part of her deed. It is plainly written and so ironclad that a middle school civics class would understand it and reach the same decision as any judge. Did Jenny Rice not read it?
Most would agree that fanning the flames is a tricky point to define. One writer’s candor could be interpreted by another person as an attack.
We’re gathering signatures and spreading information about Lolita and the Orca Network retirement plan. See www.twitter.com/bowkerwalking. Let’s keep hoping, keep working.
Two hours later, they had removed the nail and our son was left with a bill for ER of $603, for emergency room of $670, for X-rays and drugs and pharmacy and vaccine, all totaling $1,774. Outrageous.
Our hope is that our quiet presence will demonstrate to everyone in the courtroom that we support the tradition of sustainable farming and agriculture in San Juan County and recognize that this legal case poses a threat to the economic potential that sustainable farming and agriculture suggests to our local economy.
Without the ‘RoundTowner service, impaired elders and disabled people who do not drive must stay home or spend $15 to $20 for a taxi trip for medical care or to the store and back.
A grateful San Juan County Noxious Weed Control Board applauds the town for its effort and progress in combating noxious weeds.
Unfortunately, Jenny's neighbors appear to be uninterested in the greater good of our community. They are using punitive lawsuits to obstruct the operation of a legitimate business entity on San Juan Island.
