On making sheriff an appointed position | Letter

I am writing in response to your article on the San Juan County Charter Review Commission to express clear opposition to any consideration of changing the San Juan County Sheriff’s position to an appointed office. This anti-law enforcement, anti-democracy move appears to me to be an attempt to consolidate power out of the hands of citizens and into the hands of politicians. There is absolutely no excuse for them to even consider such a move. They seem to be using their perceived need for oversight as an excuse to join in on the foolish trends to punish our dedicated law enforcement agencies. Oversight is accomplished by the voters directly having the right to elect the best candidate or remove those that do not meet expectations. We have a truly outstanding sheriff and sheriff’s department so the fact that they are even considering such a move demonstrates their lack of respect for voters and extreme political bias.
