Jazz at Labs success | Letter

We are happy to announce that the University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs’ 18th Jazz at the Labs fundraiser supporting the Friday Harbor Labs (K-12) Science Outreach Program was very successful! June 30 was a cool but fun evening of generous giving, delicious food and great music by the San Juan Jazz Quintet and Seattle’s Jazz Coalescence. This year’s “Fund-a-Need” effort raised funds to support two important FHLSOP science programs — the high school biotech labs and the fourth-grade nearshore fish habitats projects. In addition, all Fund-a-Need donations were matched 1-1 from an enthusiastic supporter of the FHLSOP. Matched funds will be added to the UW FHLSOP K-12 Endowed Fund.

This event’s fundraising supports our FHLSOP projects at every grade level in the San Juan Island public schools and the Spring Street International School. In the 2018-19 school year, we will work with approximately 742 students and 24 teachers. The goal of the FHL Science Outreach Program is to get students actively involved in the process of science. We have developed a set of hands-on, inquiry-based projects specifically designed to complement and enhance the current science curriculum in our local schools. Our program gives students the opportunity to engage in science while conducting experiments and doing fieldwork. The students are the scientists!

At the event, we gratefully acknowledged and thanked our 2018-19 sponsors of Friday Harbor Labs Science Outreach Program: C & E Publications; Cask and Schooner Restaurant; Chicago Title & Escrow; Coldwell Banker SJI; Friday Harbor Drug; Island Petroleum Services; Islanders Insurance; Kings Market; Luxel Corporation; the Olshefsky Family; Roche Harbor Resort; San Juan Interiors; San Juan Safaris; Gary and Susan Sterner; Tops’l restaurant; Toyota of Bellingham; and Windermere San Juan Island.

FHLSOP also receives generous support from Carolyn Haugen, Rebecca and Robert Pohlad, Wells Fargo Foundation, San Juan Island Community Foundation and Women’s Fund and Port of Friday Harbor.

With much appreciation: Thank you to the Jazz at the Labs’ audience and to the San Juan Island Community. It is your support that makes this program possible. We look forward to our 18th year working with local students!
