In support of Fire & EMS | Letter to the Editor

During my 25 years in Emergency Services, I have had the privilege to work with many dedicated individuals, paid and volunteer, firefighters and EMTs. I can say without a doubt that the members of San Juan Island Fire & Rescue and San Juan Island EMS are amongst the best in the country at what they do. And what they do is take care of the citizens and visitors of San Juan and surrounding islands, no matter the emergency, no matter the time, no matter the agency.

I believe that the integration of Fire & EMS is in the best interest of San Juan Island’s citizens. Consolidating the training, administration, and operations of the two agencies will lead to a more responsive and efficient all-hazards organization that is capable of handling any emergency. Integration will allow for faster response times, a larger pool of trained emergency responders, and more resources to respond to both emergent and routine calls for service.

The integration process has been a long one, and there have certainly been times of conflict. Disagreement is natural amongst people that are passionate about their cause. But all of us involved have continued to move forward because we believe that it is the right choice for the community. And during it all, the firefighters and EMTs have continued to work, train, and respond together to serve their community. We owe it to them to formalize that relationship and provide them the stability that comes from one unified agency.

I urge you to look beyond the misinformation being broadcast by a vocal minority and cast a vote in favor of the EMS levy and in favor of the integration of Fire & EMS. It is the best path forward for the health and welfare of all of us who live, work, and recreate on San Juan Island.
