Bike safety isn’t just for the cyclist | Letter

As I was strapping on my helmet and donning my safety glasses, I couldn’t help but think of all the cycling injuries I have treated over the years. Everything from wrist fractures to massive head injuries. Personally, I also wear a bright jacket to make my arm signals easier to see. The midwinter sunshine means more opportunity for bicylcing, with spring not so far away. As I rode, my mind was mulling bicycle safety.

Safety isn’t just for the cyclist: motorists, animals, and pedestrians are at risk from our behavior as much as we are from theirs. Cyclists are motor vehicles when the feet are on the pedals. All of the laws apply to us. Signaling is now a Federal law. We don’t drive our cars on sidewalks, nor should we ride there. When our feet are on the ground we are pedestrians and need to follow those rules. Helmets are not required in San Juan County but off-island be careful because many cities and counties do have ordinances. Personally, I won’t ride without my helmet. My daughter’s helmet saved her life. I have treated many children who were not so lucky. Head injuries are a nightmare that never ends. Is the wind in your hair really worth severe disability for the rest of your life?

My hope in writing this is to keep people thinking safe. I have plenty of patients; I don’t need job security through kamikaze cycling.
