    A year has passed since the San Juan Island Grange was suspended.
    In August 2007, the State Grange suspended the local Grange’s charter, citing “past actions” of local Grange officers and members.

    Businesses have until 4:30 p.m. Thursday to pay their 2009 business license in the Town of Friday Harbor without incurring a 50 percent penalty. Licenses were originally due by June 30.

    You might have noticed while driving through town that a new business has popped up where Griffin Bay Bookstore used to be before its move to Spring Street.
    Harbor Gallery, owned by Frank and Annaly Ledger-wood, sells home furnishings and décor from the Philippines. The store opened in early June but is the product of about three years of planning.

    Tim Clark, Agricultural Resources Committee (ARC) Farm preservation coordinator spoke to the County Council on June 24. Clark’s program is funded through a state grant to the County; his job involves public outreach, coordinating with County Assessor Charles Zalmanek, to label Open Spaces areas, drawing an agricultural map and researching funding opportunities.
    Agricultural Open Space is the classification for preserving farmland; the program is administered by the County Assessor.

    When Vic’s Drive-In opened 50 years ago June 28, it resembled a drive-in more than it does now.
    It was a smaller version of “American Graffiti’s” Mel’s, a mom-and-pop shop where you could pull up, place your order, and enjoy your meal in the comfort of your car — one of America’s favorite eating venues in the Eisenhower era.
    There was just the kitchen then, and an order window. There was no indoor seating, just tables along the side and in back. Cars parked diagonally along Second Street then.

    Bringing a lunch to work will mean bringing a sandwich and a dog bone.
    Workplaces across the country will rollover for man’s best friend.
    To commemorate the 10th year of Pet Sitters International’s “Take Your Dog to Work Day,” local businesses are being encouraged to join forces with animal shelters and professional pet sitters to celebrate the great companionship our canine pals offer.

    The owners of the RE/MAX San Juan Island franchise will buy Friday Harbor Realty and the combined offices will become Island Group Sotheby’s International Real Estate, effective July 1.
    Paul LeBaron, co-owner of Island Group, which owns the RE/MAX franchise, said Friday all employees of the merged companies will be located in what is now the Friday Harbor House building.
