    Friday Harbor Port Commission writes off $8,800 in...

    The Friday Harbor Port Commission wrote off $8,800 in bad debt Jan. 13. The amount was comprised of debt that had been held in collections for two years. Some $2,000 of that debt was from the now-defunct Island Dive. Another chunk was from unpaid slip rent for a sailboat that has been impounded.

    The San Juan County Economic Development Council and Agricultural Resources Committee will host an open house on Dec. 16, 3-5 p.m., at their offices, 540 Guard St., Suite 110. Refreshments will be served. The EDC will introduce its new executive director, Victoria Compton. She is the founder of At Home magazine and former director of Westcott Bay Institute. She succeeded Bill Watson, who retired from the position. Her first day on the job was Dec. 1. The ARC will introduce its new coordinator Peggy Bill. She succeeded Eliza Buck, who left to pursue a master’s degree.

    $154,000 grant for San Juan Islands Scenic Byway

    This second grant is specifically for the development of a corridor management plan, an essential element in Scenic Byway development. The process will bring together citizens, businesses, organizations, and local, state and federal government agencies to define the community’s vision, goals and branding of the San Juan Islands Scenic Byway. It will also develop plans for interpretation, define the infrastructure development needs, identify resource protection areas and methods, and define marketing approaches.
