Mike’s Cafe — it’s about the wine

At Mike’s Cafe and Wine Bar, just opened at 135 2nd St. S, the vegan food is great, but it’s the wine you will want to taste and the bar (and the rest of the decor) that you’ll want to experience.

Mike’s features Mike Sheradin’s Northwest Totem Cellars wines and a 25-foot, $10,000 maple-slab handmade bar, both of which Mike says “will hold your interest.”

The wine bar features six reds and four whites, mostly of his own brand, but also includes Piccola Cellars tap wines and Island Hoppin’ draft beer and six bottled craft beers.

Mike has been vinting fine wines, and garnering prizes and local recognition in Woodinville, for eight years. His recently released Cabernet Sauvignon was a double gold medal winner at the 2013 Seattle Wine Awards.

With the help of a few friends and Cheryl Jones, his wine consultant, he personally tends to every stage of small-batch, handcrafted winemaking, producing about 2,000 bottles from five premium Eastern Washington grape growers a year.

A swimming and water polo player and coach for some 25 years, Sheradin has been vacationing in the San Juan Islands for 30 years, finally deciding to open his showcase cafe in a totally remodeled building and former home of the Garden Path Cafe.

For his inexpensive but varied vegan menu, he enlisted the help of Anna Maria de Freitas and the Tucker House cooking crew, and he obtains “almost all” ingredients locally.

Among the daily fare is a Bruschetta Trio with white bean puree, roasted pepper caponata and fig tapenade, a savory vegan spanikopita and a Charcuterie Platter with mushroom pate, herbed fermented tofu cheese and olive medley. Panini or three kinds of pizza are the “larger plates” and chocolate pot au creme and other desserts appeal to dessert lovers.

Sheridan and bartender/sommelier Shawn Salamida, formerly of San Juan Vineyards, welcome you to the historic building seven days per week.
