    Ron Bates, Frank Fagan and Bob Wingate were elected to three-year terms Sunday on the San Juan Golf and Country Club Board of Trustees. The board consists of 10 members who elect a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Members also serve on committees: Finance, Greens, Handicap/Memorial, House, Membership, Publicity, Special Projects, Tennis, and Tournaments.

    Leadership San Juan Islands will host three open houses this month to recruit current and aspiring leaders for the Class of 2009. LSJI seeks candidates from all sectors of the community, from businesses and non-profits, to education and government. Alumni from LSJI Classes 2005-08 are also invited to the open houses, as well as graduates of other leadership programs held around the country who now live and/or work in the San Juans.

    Twenty employees of the Town of Friday Harbor were recognized by the Town Council Thursday for their years of service. Among the honorees were Jerry Gates of the Street Department, who has worked for the town since February 1974. Mike Wilks, Town Shop superintendent, joined the town in September 1976.

    Willie Cavenaugh, a retired educator, one-time write-in candidate for San Juan County Commission, and proprietor of the fictitious Wild Willie’s Roadkill Mortuary, has died. Mr. Cavenaugh died Oct. 2 in his home on Lampard Road. He was one day shy of his 73rd birthday.

    The Journal of the San Juan Islands received 13 awards at the 121st annual Washington Newspaper Publishers Association convention, Thursday through Saturday at the Red Lion Hotel-Yakima Center. The Journal won second place for community service — its eighth community service award since 2001 — for its reporting on, and advocacy for, efforts to reduce the use of Styrofoam on San Juan Island.

    Stewart Powell Redfern of Friday Harbor, Wash., passed away Sept. 28, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham, Wash. He was 65. Stew was born June 24, 1943 in Seattle, Wash., to Don and Mary Redfern. Stew grew up with a love of the outdoors and exploring the many places of the Pacific Northwest. The proverbial wild child, Stew had a small habit of finding trouble where no trouble seemed to be. If trouble could not be found, he would settle for mischief. These traits were with him to the end.
