David Lindley takes a break from his world tour with Jackson Browne to bring his eclectic and diverse musical talents back to San Juan Community Theatre, July 7 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $24 for adults, $12 for student reserved, with $5 student RUSH one hour before the show, if there are still seats available.
The Box Office is open Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online at www.sjctheatre.org.
Rhiana Franklin was runner-up in the KMPS 94.1 FM Colgate Country Showdown, June 25 at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma. She plans on competing in other showdowns scheduled in the state, with the hopes of advancing to the Colgate Country Showdown state final Sept. 5 at the Kittitas County Fair. State winners advance to the regional final. Regional winners advance to the national showdown.
The Friday Harbor Fire Department will mark the arrival of the department’s latest fire engine Thursday afternoon. The unit, built by E-One Fire Apparatus in Ocala, Fla., replaces a 1988 engine that was removed from service in 2008, following failure of the fire pump. A 1978 fire engine was purchased from Oak Harbor as a stop-gap; that engine will be relegated to reserve duty. The current reserve engine that was purchased by the firefighters association will be sold.
At Robert Kolowitz’s old job at the San Juan Island solid waste transfer station, there was a saying, “Garbage in, garbage out.” Now, he’s changed his mantra to “Laundry in, laundry out.” Kolowitz, former supervisor of the transfer station on Sutton Road, is the new owner of Sunshine Laundries on 80 Web St., Friday Harbor. He purchased the laundries on June 1 from Teresa Strong. Terms were not disclosed.
Jeff Asher, candidate for San Juan County sheriff, said as sheriff he would create a reserve officer corps to reduce the impact of budget cuts on the Sheriff’s Department. Asher, a sheriff’s deputy, ran for sheriff in 2002, receiving 2,363 votes to Sheriff Bill Cumming’s 3,480. He is one of five candidates for sheriff in the Aug. 17 primary; the other candidates are Adult Probation Officer Brad Fincher, Lead Detective Brent Johnson, Deputy Felix Menjivar, and Deputy Rob Nou. The two top vote-getters in the Aug. 17 primary will advance to the Nov. 2 general election.
Anacortes Terminal Supervisor Mark Tibbles called State Transportation Commissioner Bob Distler at home late May 14 and warned him he would have him “hauled off” by the State Patrol if he “treated one of my employees like that again.”

Friday Harbor Town Councilwoman Carrie Brooks was taken off island by medevac helicopter Monday after she “very faint” at work at Islanders Bank. Pastor Archie Brooks, her husband, said she was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham where doctors are doing tests. She is comfortable and slept well Monday night. She will stay Tuesday night at St. Joseph and is expected to be released in time for her final council meeting Thursday; she resigned June 17 on the advice of her doctor.
You only have to talk to San Juan parents to know the Missoula Children’s Theatre is on to something. “It’s a fabulous idea,” says BooBoo Keane. Her daughter Julia has participated in past Missoula productions and so Keane has had direct experience with the company. On paper, it looks like hard work: Two employees of the theatre hit Friday Harbor on a Sunday and in six days cast, produce and perform a finished piece of theater using upwards of 50 children. However, Keane says that although the schedule may seem grueling, the speed is rewarding.

The correct date of Calvary Chapel San Juan’s “The Joy of Jesus” is Saturday, July 10, noon to 4 p.m., at Sunken Park. The date was incorrect in information provided to The Journal. “We’ll have live music, free games for the kids, clowns and face painting, a certified nurse for free medical questions, free haircuts provided by a local hair salon — first come, first serve — and free food and drinks,” Pastor Joe Gamez said.
