Jonah Goldberg, editor of National Review Online, conservative author and political analyst, will be the featured speaker at the Salmon BBQ and Tea Party on July 31, 2-6 p.m., at the Big Red Barn, 1721 Cattle Point Road in Friday Harbor. The event is open to the public.
I first met Bob Myhr when donating a preservation easement on our Lopez property to the San Juan Preservation Trust. We have been friends and fellow birders since, but it is his commitment to the conservation of these islands that has motivated me to get off my duff and help him get re-elected to the County Council.
The day started with a drenching rain, the kind one only experiences in the tropics. The heavy rain was accompanied by very high winds, so the morning did not bode well for the eclipse. As the morning wore on, gradually the sun came out and the sky cleared except for some white puffy clouds scudding across the sky, pushed by the remaining high winds.

The Associated Press and other news organizations are reporting that Colton Harris-Moore, the serial burglary suspect, was arrested Sunday in the Bahamas and is in custody in the capital city of Nassau.

The Washington state Health Department has closed recreational shellfish harvesting in all of San Juan County’s waters due to high levels of a biotoxin which can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning. The Department of Health has issued a bulletin warning, “Eating shellfish contaminated by marine biotoxin can kill you.” The poison is not destroyed by cooking or freezing.

Oct. 1. The positions to be filled are chairman, vice-chairman, treasurer, secretary, and an at-large position.
The Port of Friday Harbor has contracted with Joe Buckler and Karen Lundin to provide goats to eat noxious weeds on airport property near Skagit Valley College for about one month. The goats will be kept in place with a woven electric fence, which will be moved as necessary. Outside the electric fence will be an orange guard fence to keep people and dogs away from the electric fence. Buckler will be on site most of the time to supervise the goats and answer questions.
This month, San Juan County residents will have the opportunity to participate in a survey that will help guide the development of the county’s updated solid waste management plan. That plan will define the type and quality of services the county’s solid waste program develops and offers in the future.
On Tuesday, June 8, 2010, the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC) presented their recommendations to the County Council for the 2011 Lodging Tax fund allocations. It was recommended by the LTAC that the San Juan County Fair Department receive $25,000. This sum is a reduction from past years’ allocation by $20,000 or 44 percent.
Soon we will have the chance once again to flex our “voting muscles” and elect those who will be guiding us in the future of our government. I don’t normally get on my political soapbox, but I feel the upcoming election is important so I wanted to share my viewpoints.
National Park Service fire crews plan to conduct a prescribed fire on six acres of the American Camp prairie between July 8 and 14, weather permitting. This year’s treatment will encompass a three-acre parcel adjacent to Pickett’s Lane and another three-acre section near the Redoubt. The fire is designed to reduce the amount of organic material and eliminate non-native seeds, which enables native plants to hold their own with non-native species.
