    Rock into the new year with the hit Broadway show, “Grease,” performed by the Friday Harbor High School Drama Group, Jan. 8-11 at the San Juan Community Theatre. This smash-hit musical — the eighth longest-running Broadway show — is the second high school musical ever performed by the drama group.

    Friday Harbor Food Bank’s numbers double

    Susan Eichrodt, program manager for the state’s Emergency Food Assistance Program, said food banks across the state are serving more people than ever before. Friday Harbor Food Bank is experiencing the surge; the number of people needing food assistance has steadily increased since June, when the food bank expanded to Saturdays.

    Spring Street International School students put the finishing touches on cookies and cards for the community. The students distributed the holiday cheer and sang carols in the community before going on holiday break.

    Spring Street International School students spent their last day before the holiday break baking, caroling and creating cards for the community. More than 40 handmade Christmas cards and 30 plates of cookies were given to area friends, neighbors and businesses Dec. 19. Students baked and decorated dozens of sugar cookies. Gingerbread men complete with suits and smiles were stacked onto plates ready for delivery.

    On a cold, snowy afternoon just days before Christmas, Santa Claus paid a special visit to the newsroom at The Journal of the San Juan Islands.

    He wanted to remind islanders that despite the wintry weather conditions, he plans to stroll the streets of downtown Friday Harbor on Christmas Eve.

    The San Juan Island School District may reduce staff and programs beginning as early as the 2009-10 school year because of a decline in enrollment and reduction in state funding. A special board meeting is scheduled today at 6 p.m. in the Friday Harbor High School library. The meeting will address long-range planning options needed to address an anticipated $717,200 budget shortfall. The meeting is open to the public.

    A proposed committee will develop a plan to replace the crumb rubber underlayment at the Friday Harbor Elementary School playground. A public meeting is scheduled Nov. 20, 6 p.m. in the Friday Harbor Elementary School cafeteria. Organizers say community support will be essential, so an advisory board will be created to assist in the development of a plan to replace the crumb rubber.
