After more than seven months waiting for a home, Diesel is ready for his next chapter

Meet Diesel, the two-year-old boxer pitbull mix with a heart of gold! This sweet cuddle bug made his way into the care of Animal Protection Society – Friday Harbor during the holiday season and, despite being a wonderful companion, has yet to find his forever home. Diesel has watched many dogs come and go into loving homes since then, but he continues to wait for someone to discover the exceptional dog he truly is. Diesel hopes for what every shelter dog does and what he’s been waiting almost seven months for: a family to call his very own.

Today, Diesel is thriving in a foster home, where he receives individual attention, training, structure and plenty of love. His foster family has watched him grow in confidence, learn new skills and settle into daily life as a cherished companion. And what they’ve learned is simple: Diesel is a really good dog.

He loves people, is great with kids, gets along with other dogs and has done well around livestock. With proper introductions and supervision, he can also live successfully with cats. He is equally happy joining in on an adventure, accompanying someone through a busy workday or relaxing quietly at home.

Like many young dogs, Diesel still has some puppy enthusiasm and a playful spirit, but has been working hard on impulse control and has made a lot of improvement. He’s a smart boy who’s eager to learn! He enjoys exploring, learning and being involved in whatever is happening around him. Continued training and socialization will help him reach his full potential, but the foundation is already there.

Around the island, Diesel has become something of a familiar face. He is often found training or playing at the San Juan County Fairgrounds, where he enjoys practicing new skills and stretching his legs. He also loves accompanying his foster family on errands and is known to happily sniff around the County office, greeting the world with curiosity and enthusiasm.

“What people don’t always see in a shelter profile is the dog behind the description,” said Diesel’s foster mom, Elli. “Diesel is affectionate, funny, eager to learn, and genuinely wants to be part of whatever you’re doing. He’s the kind of dog who makes every day better, and I know he’s going to be an incredible companion for the person or family who gives him a chance.”

What stands out most about Diesel, however, is his heart. Those who know him describe him as deeply affectionate, loyal and eager to connect. He forms strong bonds with the people around him and seems genuinely invested in being part of a family. The kind of dog who checks in with you on a walk, follows you from room to room and simply wants to be wherever his people are.

Unfortunately, Diesel faces challenges familiar to many shelter dogs. Studies and shelter professionals have long observed that black dogs are often overlooked in adoption settings, and pitbull-type dogs frequently experience longer waits for homes due to misconceptions about the breed. Yet anyone who spends time with Diesel quickly realizes he is not a stereotype.

He is a loving companion. A loyal friend. A dog with a playful spirit, a gentle nature and an enormous capacity for affection. His foster family sees it every day. Shelter staff see it. Volunteers see it. Now all he needs is for the right adopter to see it, too.

Diesel is ready for a permanent home where he can continue to grow, learn and share his life with a family of his own. Community members are encouraged to share his story and help spread the word. Sometimes all it takes is one share, one conversation or one introduction to change a dog’s life forever.
