Joy Bell | 1925-2020

Joy Nettie Bell was born Dec. 21, 1925, in Southampton, England. She died March 28, 2020, at home in Friday Harbor, Washington. She was 94. Parents William Eric Hall and Nettie May (Brooks) Hall raised her with brothers, John and Ian in Southport, England. All surviving WWII. Her adventurous spirit took her around much of the world beginning with an exchange librarian stint in Brooklyn, New York, in 1954. Meeting our father, Cornelius Smith, in Seattle while on a greyhound bus tour of the US, that same year. Settling in Seattle area for 40 years. She worked for Seattle Public Libraries, later marrying Gerry Pellegrini owning Stadium Cleaners in Seattle. Then courted by and marrying George Bell, a lifelong family friend, to reside on The Isle of Jersey, UK for 22 years. All preceded her in death as well as her parents, brothers John Hall (Valerie) and Ian Hall, survived by Lois Hall Moore. Joy returned to the Pacific Northwest in 2018 to be closer to family. She contributed joyously to every community she lived in, up until her last days. Being a lover of art, music, gardening, reading and travel — and taking daily walks, definitely added to her rich life.

She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer (John) Johnsen, Alison (Bill) Engle and Wendy Smith. Grandchildren Benjamin (Ellen) Noble, Laura (Austin) Heath, Anna (Matthew) McKenna, Christina (Nathan) Coody, Eric Johnsen, Heather (Jonathan) Payan and Matthew (Susan) Johnsen. Fourteen great-grandchildren.

Services will be held, this summer, at St David’s Episcopal Church, Friday Harbor, Washington. In lieu of flowers, at this time, donations may be made to St. David’s, Hospice, Friday Harbor Food Bank or KING FM radio. All dear to her heart.
