Submitted by San Juan County.

The Climate and Sustainability Advisory Committee was established by the San Juan County Council in early 2022 to help steer the County’s climate action work by advising on policy, helping set priorities and harnessing the momentum of existing work. The committee seeks to provide opportunities for cross-pollination of ideas and to increase collaboration around climate and sustainability efforts throughout San Juan County.

The committee consists of 11 members who represent various sectors and perspectives on climate and sustainability issues, such as renewable energy, construction and green building, transportation, agriculture, economic development and ecology. Meetings are bi-monthly on the fourth Thursday of the month, in the evening. The new members will be expected to attend meetings and participate in the committee’s activities and projects.

The Climate and Sustainability Advisory Committee is currently doing the exciting work of guiding the development of the County’s Climate Action Plan. The committee’s youth member brings an essential youth perspective on climate issues and actions and helps create greater opportunities for youth engagement. They are a voting member of the board and carry the same responsibilities.

The Department of Environmental Stewardship coordinates multiple advisory committees that provide a structured, transparent way for community members to participate in local governance. These committees ensure the County’s stewardship program priorities and recommendations are informed by community values, local knowledge and subject matter expertise. Advisory committees are a core component of local democracy. They create consistent, documented opportunities for residents to help shape policy direction, program priorities and project implementation.
