SJIMA showcases local artists in annual Artist Registry exhibit

From now until Feb. 20, the works of 70 local artists are on display at the San Juan Islands Museum of Art.
“It is one of the best shows ever. Everyone “upped their game” so it is a stunning show,” said Diane Martindale, President of the Board of SJIMA. Attendees have echoed her remarks.
Inspired by soaring snow-capped mountains, lush glens and valleys of conifers, ancient volcanic and granite rock formations, clear emerald seas along with the cultures of indigenous peoples, visual artists have been drawn to the San Juan Islands for decades. The Artist Registry show is a chance for the community to view the talents of their neighbors.
The exhibit includes a variety of sculptures, textile art, encaustic, jewelry, photography, mixed media, ceramics, glass, watercolor, oil painting, pastels and acrylic, drawing and prints. Some of the artists are new to the museum. Ranna McNeil is exhibiting for the first time at SJIMA. Photographer Angel Colmenares is also relatively new to the San Juans. Colmenares’ vibrant work portrays hidden stories about his subjects. Islanders might also recognize several long-time resident artists, including Sandra Bayley, Daniel Finn, Joe Cooper, Francie Hansen, Jim and Lisa Lawrence, Lynne Mercer, Terry Ogle and Tom Small.
