SJICF has awarded $177,000 to local graduates

Another end of the school year signals a new scholarship awards season at the San Juan Island Community Foundation. Over the last few months, SJICF has awarded $177,000 in college scholarships and awards to 39 local students for the 2019-2020 school year.

Nine graduating seniors from Friday Harbor High School and three from Spring Street International School were awarded new scholarships from funds held at the San Juan Island Community Foundation. Twenty-five previous recipients were also awarded one-year renewals and new scholarships.

Students are selected each year based on their financial need, level of academic achievement and community involvement. Three funds are awarded based on the intended field of study.

At the Friday Harbor Middle School eighth grade promotion event on June 13, two students received the Deanna J. Anderson Legacy Fund award. Each year, this award is given to two young women excelling in the areas of math and/or science. The 2019 winners were Islay Ross for science and Ari Tucker-Belt for math.

“These scholarships change the lives of our students and their families. We’re so grateful for Jerry Inskeep’s legacy gift and for the many donors who have donated 100% of the scholarship funds.

“Because of their amazing generosity, the Foundation can provide scholarships to local students in perpetuity.”

Established in 1994, SJICF is celebrating 25 years of success in granting funds to local nonprofits and providing scholarships to local students through the generosity of donors who wish to improve the quality of life on San Juan Island.
