An avid equestrian and chairwoman of San Juan Island Trails Committee, Theresa Simendinger will be the featured speaker in the next episode of the committee-sponsored “Know Your Islanders Talks.”

Her presentation, a talk about her trail ride through the homeland of the Masai people in the east African country of Kenya, gets under way at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, at San Juan Island Library.

A memorable and intoxicating trip, Simendinger rode roughly 30 miles each day through territory the Masai have long called home, encountering elephants, lions and giraffe along the way. Her journey ended on the island of Zanzibar, referred to by many as Spice Island, where Simendinger swam with wild dolphins and enjoyed the antics of a colony of Red Colubus monkeys in the island’s jungles.

The presentation features photographs of Simendinger’s journey and her reflections on the culture of the Masai.

The program is co-sponsored by Trails Committee and library, with light refreshments provided courtesy of The Friends of the Library.
