Art contest featured in National Parks ‘BioBlitz’

Pick up your palette and get ready to go.
Wildflowers and the creatures that pollinate them is the theme of San Juan Island National Historical Park’s 2013 Community Arts in the Park competition.
The competition, part of the Historical Park’s first-lever “BioBlitz,” May 3-4, is intended to inspire community connections to local ecology and outdoor stewardship, and to celebrate ecology through art.
National Parks will accept entries for the competition of any artistic medium between April 1-11 that adhere to these guidelines: 2-D size of 8-by-10 inches or 11-by-14 inches, only, either portrait or landscape in orientation; 3-D size between 4-inch and 18-inch square (for contest details visit the SJINHP website, www.nps.gov/sajh.
Winners will be announced May 3, at the BioBlitz, an event that brings together taxonomic inventory, public outreach and scientific education to develop a better understanding of what lives in the park. A species inventory at its core, the BioBlitz divides volunteers into teams, each led by an bonafide scientist, which then search, find, identify and photograph as many species as possible within a 24-hour period to create a snapshot of various habitats at a distinct period of time.
