The timing could not have been better.

The Friday Harbor girls soccer team unleashed its first real scoring barrage of the season in dealing their inter-island league rivals, the Vikings of Orcas, a decisive 4-0 defeat at home, Tuesday.

Speedy sophomore Emily Guard put the first of Friday Harbor’s four goals on the board at the 13:13 mark of the opening period, beating the Vikings defensive unit on a breakaway scoring dash from midfield.

Friday Harbor upped its advantage to 2-0 just before the half, as co-captain Larissa Nash, capitalizing on a corner kick by teammate Robyn Roberts, booted in a loose ball that was up for grabs and dangling at the front doorstep of the Vikings goal.

With the win, Friday Harbor improved to 2-0 in Northwest 1A/2B League play and 2-2-3 overall. They also notched their first shutout victory of the year.

The Wolverines, who took control of what had been a see-saw contest in the final stages of the opening period, kept the Orcas offense bottled up after the break and sealed the win by dominating the closing period of play. Guard punched in her second goal of the game after the break and senior Teagan Serna tallied her third goal of the season, and the team’s fourth of the game, in the second period as well.

The Wolverines, the defending Northwest 1A/2B League champ, are on the road, Thursday, to square off against league rival La Conner; game time is 4 p.m. (Saturday’s game at Meridian has been rescheduled for Oct. 15).
