Wolverines baseball keeps winning streak alive

The Friday Harbor Wolverines played against the Orcas Vikings Tuesday, May 2. After a touch and go game, Friday Harbor was able to pull ahead for a win, 5-4.

“That sure was a great comeback,” said coach Rich Warin. “After falling behind in the first inning and not seeming to have anything go our way the guys really battled back.”

By the third inning, Orcas was ahead, 0-3. Sophomore Nick Herko hit a triple and was able to come home, scoring the first point for Wolverines. In the fourth inning, Orcas scored one more, making it 1-4. Friday Harbor fought back and eeked out one more run at the bottom of the fifth. At the top of the six, the score was 2-4. Pitcher Rio Black, senior, had strong six-inning game, Warin said, with 10 strikeouts.

The Wolverines made three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Orcas, however, had one more inning to pull ahead. Freshman Satchel Pieples came in for the save in the last inning, striking out two. The final score 5-4.

“Every team member contributed to that great team win,” said Warin. “Big hits-great plays on defense and great pitching pulled that one out.”

The Wolverines are at the top of their league, with 9 wins and 1 loss. The next home game is Friday, May 4, where they will face off against LaConner at 4:45 p.m.
