With three returning coaches–Darrin Scheffer as head coach, Herb Mason as assistant coach and Nathan Fihn as volunteer “throwing coach” and even more athletes than last year the Friday Harbor High School track team is looking ahead to a successful season.

“We’ve got a fair amount of promising beginners,” said Fihn. “There’s also a couple seniors who I’m really looking forward to helping round out their track careers.”

During the season’s first few practices the coaches focused on the team’s general fitness before setting them free to choose which events they’d like to focus on. Events include sprints, middle and long distance running, long jump, triple jump and high jump as well as shot put, discus and javelin throwing.

The boys and girls track team have their first league meet on Thursday, March 17 at La Conner High School. The team will compete against La Conner, Concrete, Cedar Park Christian, Mount Vernon Christian and Shoreline Christian. The first home meet is on Thursday, March 24 at 3:30 p.m. Last year three Friday Harbor athletes to qualify for the 2B state competition.
