Heavy winds couldn’t keep two Wolverines from tallying personal bests, but the Lobos bested the breeze and the visiting team last week to claim a victory on their wind-swept home course.
Newcomer Joe Stewart shot 52 to tally Friday Harbor’s lowest individual score and freshman Adam Bates nearly broke the 60-stroke mark for the first time, finishing right on 60, as each player notched a personal best in the April 21 inter-island match. Lopez Island’s Alexandra Clouet shot a 48 to earn the lowest-score medal and lead the Lobos to a 203 to 224 victory.
Stewart, a sophomore, joined the golf team two weeks earlier after suffering an injury in a different sport.
“Joe is a nice addition to the team,” Coach Jack Rice said. “Once we get his slice straightened out he has a lot of potential to be a fine golfer.”
Wind gusts topped 50 mph during the match. Following Stewart’s team-best 52, the Wolverines three lowest scores were: Will Christison, 54, Jordan Davis, 55 and Max Haenel, 57.
The Wolverines will face La Conner and Mount Vernon Christian at home Tuesday, April 28, and finish up their regular-season schedule on the road May 5 against Grace Academy. Friday Harbor will then compete in the first-ever Friday Harbor Invitational High School Tournament, an 18-hole competition, hosted by San Juan Golf & Tennis Club, Friday, May 8.
