The Friday Harbor Wolverines won their third consecutive League soccer title with an efficient win over Concrete, Oct. 14 at Concrete.

In the past, the team has been slow off the mark in their games with the Lions, but not this day.

The tone was set by Mandy Turnbull’s left-footed rocket into the back of the net in the 5th minute. This was followed by goals in the 13th by Clara Brand (assisted by Robyn Roberts), a brace by Teagan Serna in the 25th and 27th (the latter assisted by Elle Guard), and one by Emily Guard in the 27th (assisted by the elder Guard). The final goal of the half was Rebecca Leff’s first, set up by Jenny MacDonald.

Many changes of personnel and position took place in the second half. Elle Guard took over at goal, yielding one, and regular keeper Rhiana Franklin scored her first career goal in the 78th minute assisted by Liz Taylor.

Final score: Friday Harbor 7, Concrete 1.

La Conner 2

The Wolverines defeated La Conner 3-2, at La Conner.

The game looked like it would be a rout as Robyn Roberts scored off an Elle Guard cross in the first minute, and Liz Taylor’s corner was deflected in off a La Conner player in the 8th. However, the Braves fought back and scored midway through the half.

Friday Harbor took control of the action as the second half began, and Clara Brand scored what proved to be the winner early in the session off another Guard pass. For the first time during League play, keeper Rhiana Franklin was called upon to make a number of nice saves.

Next: The Wolverines (10-3-1) hosted the Orcas Vikings on Oct. 19. They travel to La Conner on Oct. 25. District 1 playoffs begin Oct. 27.
