Sailing season has begun

Submitted by the Friday Harbor Sailing Team

It’s been all sunshine and moderate breezes at Jacksons Beach, a nice welcome back to the Friday Harbor Sailing Team, which has recently begun its 2019 sailing season.

This year features some new faces, as well as some tried and true veterans of past seasons, along with a new coach, Rhys Balmer, the owner of Griffin Bay Adventures. Returning sailors are seniors Addi Kessler and Leah Black, and junior Zoe Calverley, and Gavia Boyden, a ninth grader.

New to the team are three young men, who are all new to the sport, including sophomore Wyatt Evans, and freshmen Tawan Edholm and Frankie Black. Also new to the team are a pair of ninth-grade young women, Marina West and Katie Beyer, who both have experience on the water and should help the team for many years to come.

This group will practice a couple of days per week and most likely compete in local regattas around the area. The team is sponsored by the Friday Harbor Sailing Foundation, which aims to get people into boats and onto the water.
