Clutch at the plate and on the mound, the Wolverines proved nearly bullet proof in a 5-1 victory at home, Saturday, over Lyden Christian.

Junior Brandon Lambright struck out 10 would-be hitters, scattered three base hits over six innings on the mound and held the visiting Lyncs scoreless to earn the win.

“It’s his best outing of the year,” Coach Rich Warin said of the junior right-hander. “This time he eased up a little to find the plate when he struggled with his control.”

Lambright also hit safely in two trips to the plate.

With the win, Friday Harbor boosted its stature in the post-season District 1A playoff brackets, which begin Saturday, at Pipeline Fields in Blaine, and will face Lynden Christian in a rematch in the opening round. Game time is noon.

In Friday Harbor’s half of the first inning, freshman Gabe Lawson took advantage of a bases-loaded opportunity and lofted a fly to right field to put the Wolverines on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly.

Lawson also opened the third inning by smacking a long line drive to center field and landed on third with a standup triple after the Lyncs centerfield misjudged the flight of the ball.

Sophomore Otis Cooper-West gave up an earned run in one inning of relief, but had two base hits and one RBI at the plate. Freshman Peter Holt also had a pair of base hits.

With a 4-1 victory at home over Concrete April 23, the Wolverines (7-1 league, 12-4 overall) avenged their only loss in league play and grabbed a share of first place, along with Concrete, in the Northwest 1A/2B League standings, to clinch a ninth consecutive league title.
